Type 2 newbie and unhappy about timing

I have been diagnosed with Type2 diabetes. Not too shocked as for the last two years I have been a carer for a Lady with Alzheimers and ignoring my own Heath and diet (basically ignoring the symptoms and eating a lot of takeaways as too tired to cook). However I went to the doctors for a routine appointment and left with Type 2 diabetes and told to eat a healthy diet and return in October to a diabetic clinic. No meds, no monitor but just eat well and start getting rid the of the three stone overweight.

The diagnosis has come just before a major birthday celebration for me with a birthday meal with 26 friends. Everyone will want to buy me a drink. Eat birthday cake with me (I would like to add my son has a birthday the day before and yet another birthday cake will be in the house!). I don't know what I should be eating at the restaurant either. I suppose I can watch my husband drink any champagne that maybe given to me as a present. Can anyone give me advice on how to celebrate and not feel rotten afterwards?

Hello and welcome. Assuming you are not otherwise ill, and that your T2 blood sugar is at a lower level since you're not on meds, I suggest you have a wonderful birthday party, eat moderate pieces of birthday cake, sip half a glass of champagne if you like, have a nice meal but avoid just one or two things you think might not be a good idea so you feel pleased with yourself (this is psychological as much as physical) and when it's all over come back and tell us about it and we'll help you get on the right track.
I forbid you to feel rotten about any of this -- it's a family celebration and not to be missed :)
If that's wrong someone will put me right.

Thank you that all I wanted to hear. I am so glad I joined this forum.

I agree ..its only one day in the year ..enjoy

Thanks again guys I just felt a bit lost. It one thing for the docs to tell you that you have diabetes and the damage it can cause then you have to wait a month for any further advice on how to live longer than continuing untreated. All the little ailmentsI have felt for the last year or so I have put down to the physical care work and not sitting at a desk anymore. I have changed to low carb but I think I have a few carb flu symptoms eg foggy head, tired and heavy limbs. I just don't want the headaches and frequent trips to the loo at nights to return.

Hi HEG

I've just been diagnosed today, well it's not official until I have my 2nd blood test next week. However, my GP has told me I AM diabetic and she very much doubts the next fasting test will produce a figure of below 6. My first one was 8.1.

Like you, I've ignored what I've been eating and lapsed into bad habits. The advice you've been given is very similar to mine
1. Diet / lose weight
2. Eat healthily avoiding sugar, high fat

I was told I'd be contacted by the Diabetic Nurse once I've had the 2nd blood test and she doesn't want to prescribe meds. I suppose it's down to us to try and see if we can manage it with diet and lifestyle changes. And who said anything was easy?!

I am off to a concert on Saturday and my hubby and I have a hotel booked for an overnight stay. I was looking forward to a few drinks and a nice meal. I've been told not to touch alcohol pending my re-test and to avoid sugary food etc, etc. So I know how you must be feeling. I'd personally have A glass of champagne and a small piece of birthday cake and enjoy the celebrations that were planned before your diagnosis. And then, start the sensible eating plan etc the day after!

There is so much support on here. I've been pre-diabetic and the help I've received in the past has been fab. Stick with it and update us when you can x

To hell with it...enjoy it while you can...tomorrow is another day. How long until your celebrations?

I agree with all the others. Have a fab time, have some cake but not a lot, drink as much red wine as you like (fine for diabetics along with dry white) and enjoy. Start properly when its all over.

The end of September my family has three birthdays in a row so the house usually looks like a card shop by the end. If I hadn't had a diagnosis I would probably be eating pizza or Burger King for all three days with plenty of rosé wine and eating birthday cake for breakfast! But now there is going to be that nagging that have I been just lucky that serious damage hasn't happened and maybe a full on go for it will be that step too far. They say ignorance is bliss so I am torn between I'm glad I know and can now do something about it and great timing I going to party sober and decline that party animal opportunity!

Well just to update the lunchtime meal was fine I had an Italian omelette with salad and two boiled new potatoes. Dessert was one scoop of ice cream and half a glass of rose wine. However on the evening I did go a little wild and drank a large homemade fruit juice cocktail and tortilla crisps, carrot sticks and humous nibbles. The results when I went to bed with my heart thudding like mad and a foggy must feeling the next morning!

Glad you enjoyed it without too much grief. Especially when you went a little wild. It gave you an "ouch" as expected. Nothing more unsettling than a binge which should send your BS up but doesn't.
