Hi

My name is David, I am 56 and earlier this week I was diagnosed with type 2.

My doctor told me that my blood glucose level was 'very high' at 16.4. He said that it was unlikely to be controlled by diet alone and prescribed Metformin 500g. I was told to take one tablet a day initially and step this up to two a day after 5 days. I am on day 2 now. I don't feel much different so far except my stomach feels as if I swallowed a brick!

At the start of the year I weighed 18st 3lbs but now I am 16st 10lbs. I am 6ft 1in, so still overweight. I lost the weight by cutting down rather than by following any particular diet. My doctor says that the undiagnosed and untreated diabetes will have assisted the weight loss!

I have been booked into a diabetes clinic in a weeks time and at this point I'm just confused!

Hi David Welcome to the group! Hope we can help you cope with the changes in your life.
You might find it helpful to have a blood glucose meter. they aren't very expensive. You can get them from pharmacies and from their manufacturers websites. The disposables are the more costly bit. Try Abbot Diabetes Care, their service is excellent.
the other useful tool is Collins Little Gem Calorie guide. Costs under £5 and fits into a pocket. It will show you what you are actually eating.
The food that most affects your blood glucose is the carbohydrate group.
Look on my "sticky" on this forum if you don't already know what that is.
Armed with knowledge and a meter, you can make changes to your meals and exercise routine and find out what happens. You MIGHT, be able to control your condition with diet and exercise, if you get thin( I know it' easier said than done) and concentrate on diet. Read this forum to find what is likely to suit you.
There is a range of things you can do.

Thanks to all for the comments and advice. I have been reading loads and things are becoming a bit clearer. I will step up the Metformin on Saturday. Side effects appear to be subsiding today so that's good.

Thanks
David
