Hello

A year ago I was diagnosed with Type 2, I had a body scan at the time too as despite being a slim build I had very fatty organs and my cholesterol was through the roof. at around 8 mmol and my blood sugar was in the high teens.
I had a beer belly starting to appear, felt lethargic and let's say I had circulation issues
I have 4 children and it knocked me for 6 as I didn't think I ate a particularly bad diet but consented I was going to knock 7 bells out of this.
My Dad had been diagnosed a year prior to me ironically and was immediately placed on Metformin and Statins, he's 61 I'm 39.
I decided to educate myself on Diabetes, read book after book, medical journals, holistic approaches, natural treatments etc but I decided that to give my body a fighting chance I had to lose the internal fat.
So I began by hitting the cross trainer, 15 minutes daily, Diet changed as to cut out all processed foods, trans-fats and hydrogenated fats and oils and Monosodium glutamate . and multiplied my intake of leafy green vegetables, oats , soya , nuts super- fruits and seeds. and It was rather fun as I've always been a keen cook.
I cut down red meat intake and increased omega oils , porridge, oily fish, WATER!!
I've tried a myriad of different natural remedies, some worked and some didn't, the decision to monitor and try to tackle this myself was something I was determined to do.
It's a personal choice- I wanted to see if I could do it without Metformin and statins and would commit to blood tests and cholesterol checks every three months, My Doctor was happy with this.
Diet, commitment ,moderate exercise, and cutting down alcohol consumption has changed me for the better, I'm leaner, fitter and this morning I got my results back, they were:
HB1AC: 48 (6.5 MMOL)
Total cholesterol: 4.5
I'm so happy, great feeling to know that it can be done, and whilst these results arn't the best, I'm still free of the medically prescribed drugs and getting better and better at self management.
I think my hobby and love of food and nutrition has really helped and I wish anyone out there who may be struggling to suggest I haven't found it difficult but exciting- I am biased though as I would happily live in the Kitchen.
I have a full medical "overhaul" around September and I hope to improve further on these results.
Thanks for reading this and have a great day.

This is interesting and inspiring.
Well done!
I've taken the other route and whilst I was officially diagnosed as type 2 earlier today ( but have already reduced my hba1c by a lump) , lost weight and cut out the cack) I'm giving metformin a try to boost my own efforts.
I was well prepared emotionally to be given the bad news and being told that I have a chronic condition at 47 ain't the end of my world.
I have done a lot of reading in the positive effects of metformin ( versus dietary control alone) and providing I don't allow this pill to relieve me of my will power..then I will give it a go for a month.

Perhaps just by giving my pancreas a bit of a rest, I may be able to sort myself out and come off the metformin.
But, providing it does not effect my life in a negative manner, what's the harm in a pill from time to time?

Again, well done.... And with that I'm going on the weights for 1/2 an hour!

Thanks DaveNN

Good to hear you have a very positive approach to this, It's amazing what simple things like drinking plenty of filtered water can do for you.
I only say filtered as tapwater contains cholorine and its toxic to the pancreas-which is the very thing we're trying to repair here
It will be interesting to see what your results are in a few months time.

It is a massive benefit. I know from previous posts with DaveNN that he is away in hotels and travelling so it is not as easy for him to control things. Having time is a great benefit, especially planning and preparing. DaveNN is single handedly attempting to reduce the world's tuna population though so, I'm off to Aldi to get some tins whilst they still have them.

I recently discovered that the local fish wholesaler sold direct to the public. They sell daily fresh fish and are open at 5am. They close at 12.30. I bought a big chunk of a lovely white fish without asking about it, turned out to be halibut. Pricey, but a very meaty fish. Lots of things like squid, octopus and mussels too. They also sell chicken so I guess they sell to restaurants that do paella. Shall have to give that a go with some brown rice which works for me.

Made my first vegetarian indian yesterday, two pepper halves on a bed of brown rice cooked in a vegetable stock, stuffed with onion, peas, green beans, tomato, paneer cheese, and chopped ginger, spiced with cumin, corriander, garam massala and chilli, all baked in an oven and topped off with 5 mins under the grill. They'd charge you eight or nine quid in a restaurant for that but all the ingredients are cheap enough. It's time, you need time for all that washing and chopping.

Recipe sounds great!
I would throw some tumeric in too.
Have you tried inexpensive basa fillets of fish?
I'm trying to do my bit for dwindling cod stocks.
If you pop down aldi like you say, their tinned salmon makes great fishcakes too.

Thanks and I will report back.
I've had a rough week, family issues, nothing too bad but it did throw me for a day or so.

It's of some comfort that many others are experiencing similar highs/lows to me.
We have a side on side "American" fridge/ freezer...with ice and chilled water on tap.
This does have a filter in, though it does need changing!
I've found it to be a god send, especially now...as I cannot abide corporation pop straight out of the tap!

I do feel a bit if a fraud, when I read of fellow posters with BG readings in double figures, insulin injections etc- but...on the other hand, if I've hurt my little toe and then come across an amputee- it doesn't make my toe hurt any less.
