Hi
I was diagnosed wit type 2 diabetes at the end of january and was put on glucaphage 850 mg twice daily. Last week found out i was 7 wks pregnant and was told i had to start insulin straight away. I was admitted into my local maternity hospital and they started me on novarapid and insulitard (think thats the right spelling :D ) but they told me that they will leave me on the glucaphage for a while. Can anyone tell me why this is???? And will it harm the baby???

Still in shock that i am pregnant  Still only gettin used to the diabetes!!!

Thanks

Nicola :D

Hi nicola,
Congrats on being preggie!
I have type 2 but not pregnant! Just take it easy and have you got a blood testing machine?.
My mum is type 1 and she had me she said that the diabetes got better while preggies!
i don't know alot about insulin! Welcome to the forum! You will need regular meals throughout the day! Hopefully someone who is knows more will be able to answer your questions!
Main thing is take it easy and look after yourself! remember regular meals and don't skip any!

Which says that although there don't appear to be any negative effects in pregnancy it is usually contraindicated. However anecdotally it has been used by Type 2s and people with PCOS without problems.

You may not need it when your insulin is properly titrated though.

Congratulations!
