Hi all, I was diagnosed around 3 years ago and have been controlling levels quite well by diet and exercise..... until recently that is.

Around October '97 levels started rising into the teens and by Dec/Jan into the twenties. GP started me on on Metformin 500mg in the morning and 1000 at night which brought levels down somewhat but not enough.

I am now on 1000mg morning and night but fasting level still fluctuates between 11 and 14ish and fter meals around 16 to 19.

My review with GP is only mid Mar but I feel this need reviewing asap, am I being paranoid or what?

Hi Ed,

No, you are not being paranoid. Those levels are miles too high and don't seem to be under control. Do you normally keep your blood sugar levels under control through diet, or do you rely on the meds to do that for you?

If you can't get an earlier appointment than mid-March then why not try drastically reducing your carbohydrate intake for a few days and see what difference that makes.

Original post should read diagnosed Oct '07 NOT '97 ...

Thanks Dennis, I try to control by means of diet but find it difficult as I feel tired and hungry much of the time, sometimes with almost hypo type symptoms even when sugar levels are sky high. So yes I am relying on the medication to make up for my lapses!

Oh yes as the levels rose my weight went down by a stone or so (for the first time) so the typical symptoms now seem to be showing themselves grrr.

Time to actually change GP instead of just contemplating it as I have for a loooong time, hopefully find one closer to home with a more aggressive attitude to diabetes8)

Hi Ed,

If you reduce the carbs but substitute with an equivalent weight of protein that should keep your energy levels up.

Will try that Dennis, really need to get something sorted as my reading was over 22 last night after a mainly pasta dinner. Even exercise is not having an effect ... 11.3 fasting this morning, cup of coffee walked about a mile and mucked out a stable, came home tested ... still 11.3!!!

Ed,

Those readings are very high - and pasta is one of the highest carbohydrate foods you can eat. You may need something a bit more drastic to bring those levels down so why not try having a couple of days with little or no carbs. For example
breakfast - bacon & eggs (scrambled, fried, poached), or 2 boiled eggs - no bread
lunch - a light salad - tuna or cheese, lettuce, tomato, cuc umber, onion, followed by a small amount of fruit - again no bread
dinner - a ham or chicken salad, fruit to follow, again no bread.
If you feel hungry between meals then have some cheese and a handfull of nuts - lots of protein but very few carbs.

After 2 days you should see a big change in your BG. Then you can gradually re-introduce some carbs, like pasta or bread or potatoes, but not all at once, and keep testing to see what effect each one has on your BG as you re-introduce them.
