Type 2 self testing

If your question is should Type2s test I would say yes for as long as it takes for you to get some information as to which foods you can eat without them raising your blood sugars.
Intensive testing is recommended for the first few months and then you can relax a bit and only test when introducing new foods, having a stressful day, being unwell, lack of or too much exercise. You have to educate yourself as to what the readings mean because if you are just testing for the sake of it then you are wasting your time and money, (if you have to provide your own test strips).

All newly diagnosed Type 2 diabetics should be given a blood glucose meter and test like crazy for a couple of months as catherinecherub said. Figure out what your morning levels are, what they are just before you go to bed, before and after exercising, before meals, and especially after meals. I tested a huge number of times after meals to figure out when the peak happens. It's not the same for everyone, but for me it was pretty close to an hour after I started eating. You can then adjust your carb intake at meals until the peak is at an acceptable level. All this data will give a better idea what is going on with your blood glucose levels and how to correct it.

I am an avid tester. Every day I test as soon as I get out of bed, and immediately before I get into bed, plus before lunch and tea. This gives me an idea of what my base levels are. If I am testing out a meal (which is essential for the first few months) I test immediately before and again at 1 hour and 2 hours, occasionally at 2.5hrs and 3 hours if the earlier readings were still higher than I like. Once I have tested the same meal several times and amended it, I relax with that meal.
