As I have intensified my diabetes management my minimum BG has not improved, but what has happened is that the spread of readings has become more contained, i.e. little deviation from average of 6.38.

So the regime is as follows:

carbs a day lower than 80
swimming 100 lengths of 25 metres 5 times a week (buring 850 kcals a session)
taking four metformin a day
no alchohol
30% weight loss achieved

And the results for average BG over six weeks

Fasting 7.05
Breakfast +two hours 7.11
Before lunch 6.15
Lunch +two hours 5.91
Before dinner 6.03
Dinner +two hours 6.06

All readings average 6.38

So the question: why am I now getting dow into the 4s and 5s like others? Can I conclude that this is a beta cell limitation?

You could try cutting out another 20 carbs if that is doable for you?

Try for 2 weeks, then assess again?

If you can cut 10 from your breakkie and 10 from your dinner, it looks like it might just work out.

We're all different, but I suspect that if you could get your fasting and post breakfast readings down, the others may follow.
For fasting, I make sure I eat NOTHING within 2 hours of going to bed, so no late meals or snacks.
Post breakfast: if you look at the carb content of breakfast and maybe reduce that; the other post meals are all great.

With exercise, I do find that about an hour after eating is the best time for a short but fairly intense bit of exercise to really pull my BGs down. Can you pick and choose your swimming times? An hour after brekky would be great. Check the 2 hour reading then.

Other than that, I wouldn't worry about the 4s and 5s. It's the big peaks you don't want, and a good average you do want.

My apologies for my delayed response.

Thank you, Mileana.

I have taken your advice. The two table spoons of Musesli for breakfast are no more. I am now taking one slice of Burgen with low carb toppings (cheese, peanut butter, mushrooms etc.) and a little meat. That is helping.

Beyond that, my carbs are now down to the few carbs in a lot of salad plus a little fruit. This is unlikely to hit more than 60.

Thank you, Defren.

My schedule really will not allow the retiming of exercise given work constraints.

I am focused upon your other advice and measuring.

I am getting down to 5.8 after swimming, but I am not sure that 4s will be within my reach.

Like others here, I'm going obsessional on this.

After years, I'm seeing some reduction now in hand pain.
