Hi I have been diagnosed for a year with Type 2 and also have a long standing eating disorder, where I eat nothing until I'm starving hungry and then binge on sugary food. This is usually as a result of external stress and anxiety. I've had CBT to deal with the negative thoughts that cause this behaviour and was doing really well until the Type 2 diagnosis. My BMI is 50+ and I need to lose weight - this was challenging enough with an ED but the addition of diabetes has pushed me over the edge this past couple of weeks.
Have any of you lovely people been or are in a similar situation? It can seem overwhelming having to choose between managing blood glucose and losing weight. I don't think cutting out carbs is going to work with me as I will just spite eat them! I really hate this way of thinking, but I guess I'm just going to have to deal with it!!
Steph - There are many people, including T2s, who have difficult relationships with food, including binge eating and disordered eating.
Personally, I didn't have a lot of weight to lose when diagnosed, but as I managed my bloods my spare poundage dropped off, and I'm now very slight. I never set out to lose weight, but managing my bloods, it just sort of happened.
Almost everyone has a period of missing carbs when they reduce them, but one thing many agree on is if you can see through that brief period of almost withdrawal the taste buds so often change and the sweet stuff doesn't have the same lure.
Additionally, there are many, many low-carb recipes for cake, biscuits, chocolate truffles and so on, meaning it is possible to be able to still actually eat sweet tasting things, but without the sugar.
Do you live in a family situation, or on your own? Either way that can make things easier and/or tickier.
Personally, I had an ED back in my late 20s (many moons ago now), so I do understand how these things can really get a hold on us.
Thanks @AndBreathe oddly the food I eat when I binge I don't really like - chocolate and sweets - but I find it hard to feel full if I don't eat things like oats, potatoes, pasta etc. I spent a miserable year doing Smart Points (weight watchers) which is very low carb and I felt terrible for 12 months and actually gained weight. I felt my whole body sigh with relief when I had a meal with potatoes in! Just got a blood glucose monitor so am going to see how my current diet affects it. I think I've decided that getting a handle on the ED is going to have to take priority over the blood glucose. All the talk of LCHF etc is massively triggering for me. We've been talking about it at Diabetes group and as a result I have been bingeing on sugar for the past two weeks. It's annoying but is what happens with the ED. I feel like The diabetes course has been useful but unfortunately has made me take a fair few steps backwards in my ED recovery.
The first 3 days are the hardest. There are many of us on here with ED's, of various types. I found that after the first three days or so, the carb cravings begin to get less. But, like an alcoholic with drinking, if I have a bit of carby sweet stuff again, I have to battle the three day cravings. There have been several people comment on how WW or Slimming World) didn't work for them, and indeed, like yourself @zand gained weight during her time there.
Steph. If I can lose weight anyone can. I'm losing slowly but not adding so im feeling hopeful. Lchf diet didnt help me lose weight but very low blood glucose levels constantly, does. No matter how much insulin i inject. Thanks guys. I had a lot of success with slimming world- lost 5 stone doing green days (pasta rice and potatoes for the uninitiated, with lots of fruit and veg) but can't face doing it again, and even though I lost it slowly over a few years, I then put it back on over a few years. Will have a look at the threads you suggest!
