I'm sure I've put this in the wrong place so please forgive me if I have. I'm new. Well, after my depressing morning, my thoughts on this Bank holiday weekend Friday turned to alcohol. I'm not a drinker as such. My last drink was a G&T at Christmas. I was diagnosed in February. Since then I haven't touched a drop because I daren't. I don't know what it does to glucose levels. Last September my son married abroad and I found my favourite drink which is a sweet white wine from Samos. It's 15% proof so I can only drink a little but it's gorgeous. It's almost like a liqueur. Is a drink like this bad for diabetes? Will it raise my glucose levels to give me another nasty shock tomorrow morning? Gosh, I could just drink a glass! Does anyone have the answer please?

Anything sweet such as the wine you mention is bad I'm afraid. Red wine or a dry white is fine for most people. Beer is a definite no no. I'm not sure about spirits as I never drink them but I do see posts on the forum about folk having the odd G&T (slimline tonic only)

I really am no expert on this so I don't know why I'm trying to answer your question! I do know that alcohol freezes the liver temporarily and actually lowers glucose levels during that period, but once the alcohol is gone the levels can shoot up. I also know we shouldn't drink alcohol on its own. It should be drunk during a meal. I hope someone else comes along with a better answer!

Sweet white wines are supposedly at the wrong end of desirability for diabetics. Reds and dry whites are better, but the only way to be sure In an individual case is to test your own response.

Well, for someone who doesn't know very much, you've helped a lot thank you so much. Isn't it sad? When I got back from my son's wedding I ordered a case to be sent direct from Greece and the 12 bottles are just there staring at me. I had a one glass of the bottle I brought back before I was diagnosed. :(
