Type 2's: What was your fasting blood glucose in a morning?

Cholesterol is a always a worry for me for reasons that go beyond my diabetes, although of course compounded by my diabetes.

I suffer from an inherited condition called familial heterozygous hypercholesterolemia, which causes my lipid levels to go sky high almost irrespective of what my diet is. On diagnosis my total cholesterol was 13 mmol and my bad cholesterol 8,7 mmol!

With statins, diet and exercise my last counts were : total cholesterol 3,8 mmol and bad cholesterol 2,3.

My good cholesterol seem to alway be round the 0,9 mmol mark.

I have not been going crazy on fat but I have upped my cheese and particularly egg consumption in the last couple of months to make up for lost carb calories and this is why I want to have a status report on my lipid levels.
 
Fasting is for the cholesterol (lipid) profile testing. You are right that there is no need to fast for Hba1c.

I have my cholesterol tested whenever I have my HbA1c and I've never been told to fast. They also report back to me on my results, giving the HDL, LDL and triglycerides and I'm assuming the first 2 are the lipids.
What I don't understand is, if the blood sample gives the medics a profile for a period of "x" weeks, what is the point in fasting?
I'm not trying to disagree with anyone, just trying to understand the need to fast before lipids profile. Mine fact that some practices stipulate fasting and others don't only adds to the confusion (for me). ;-)
 
I reckon you have a batch of faulty strips. It happens from time to time.
 
On diagnosis my cholesterol was 5.6. I cut out all cheese and 3 months later it had reduced to 4.5. In February I found this site and began low carb and added the cheese back in, along with some butter and full fat yoghurt. I also have about 10 eggs a week.
At my 6 month review my cholesterol had raised to 5.4 with lipids and triglycerides all moving in the wrong direction.
Someone here said dramatic weight loss can cause such a result in the early days of LCHF. I don't know if that's correct but I now limit myself to 50g cheese in any one day and I don't have the butter as I never used to have it anyway. I've stuck with full fat greek yoghurt and I also eat lots of olives and oily fish ;-). I'm waiting to see what I record at the end of November. If it hasn't improved I'll be reviewing the cheese. I eat either feta or mozzarella and much less cheddar.

Hi

Lipids is the fancy pants medical term to describe collectively cholesterol ( total, HDL and LDL) and triglycerides. Like a lot of such pretentious words it is derived from my own Greek language, "lipos" being the Greek word for fat.

My understanding is that one should always fast for 12 hours before giving a sample for a lipid count so that the results are not affected by a recent meal.

Unlike an HbA1c, which gives you a measure of average glucose levels over a period of three months and therefore does not require fasting, lipid counts give you a snapshot of your lipid levels at the point of time when the blood sample is taken.

3.6 again this morning, weight loss has slowed today though.
 
7.4 this morning. 5.4 before bed. . Never mind. Out for breakfast and off to Southend for the day . Fish and chips anyone ???

7.8 this morning bit high but have lost another kilo or 2.2lb only another 7 kg to go want to get down to 65kg. Just watching what i eat and not having too much junk
