Hi there,

There is a type 3, also known as monogenic diabetes or MODY. I was diagnosed as a type 1 in 1984 but last year my consultant made a connection between the medical conditions I have and I had a c-peptide test followed by genetic testing which confirmed a monogenic rather than autoimmune cause. Because it is a genetic condition they look for a family history of diabetes, although in my case there was no family history.

Have a look at http://www.diabetesgenes.org/ as this is a good starting point for info and Exeter carry out the c-peptide and genetic testing.

My DSN, who is also a regional genetic diabetes nurse will be altering my treatment from insulin to Gliclazide, but whether this will work after almost 30 years of injections is anybody's guess!

The type 3 diabetes defined elsewhere on diabetes.co.uk here seems to be a bit different to the monogenic diabetes described above.

http://www.diabetes.co.uk/type3-diabetes.html

which starts-

Type 3 diabetes is a title that has been proposed for
Alzheimer's disease which results from resistance to insulin in the brain.
Studies carried out by the US Brown Medical School research team identified the possibility of a new form of diabetes after finding that insulin is produced by the brain as well as the pancreas.

I think officially there is only 1, 1.5 and 2............

my opinion is that there is only 1 and 2, with different variants of 1.......
