Hi all

Thought I'd share my story.

I had a fall in March 2011 resulting in a broken foot - 8 weeks in non load bearing plaster is no joke. Had some 'routine' blood tests then I got a letter from my local hospital and I guess you guys can guess the rest.

Type 2 diagnosed = Metformin 500mg after meals :(

My practice nurse is very good, and I seem to be making reasonable progress, however one thing that really annoys me is that my pracice absolutely refuses to prescribe me any testing gear. i have bought myself an Accucheck Compact Plus (ebay) but the test strips are not cheap - I have found a 'suplier' who (I'm certain) gets them on prescription and sells them on, but really - is this any way to manage a chronic condition

(sorry - ranting !!)

Is this common practice for a GP to refuse to prescribe monitoring equipment ?

Cheers

Yep! That's the usual situation in the UK.

I cannot get a single stip or lancet on prescription.

I have complained, I have asked the PCT, the PCT say it's up to the doctor, the practice manager says they are under under pressure to keep costs down, from who? Why the PCT of course.

The fact is I can't get them and it annoys me, if I was a drug addict I could get needles and free drugs, oh! and social benefits.

So you just have to accept it or start really "rocking the boat" and then you might not be very popular at the docs!

try a Google on Gluco RX test strips they are around £12 for 50 and if you register as a T2 you don't have to pay VAT

Hi Dylansdad
If you jump to the type 2 forum at the top of the page is a petition which has been started which you / family may wish to sign concerning testing equipment.
Cheers Chutters.
