HOSPITALS,GOVEMENT CUTS,TEA,
hello everyone i want to take you on a journey,im new to this so hear goes.
do you find that going into hospital that you know more about being a diabetic than the nurses treating you,i stayed in HOPE HOSPITAL SALFORD MANCHESTER, A FEW TIMES.on 1 occasion i was asked what i wanted for dinner i replyed fish and chips.
followed by cake and custard,the nurse seen me check my blood sugars,and then said OW YOU WILL HAVE TO HAVE THE DIABETIC CUSTARD?,what? in that case you will have to give me the diabetic chips i said,and with a look of confusion she had to go and ask senior staff what to do,i get frustrated trying to explain that i have complete control over my carb counting abd weighing my food etc.i even refuse them taking control of giving me my insulin especially my morning/evening levemir,cos at one point i explained i had my morning levemir at 7am and that i wanted my 7pm dose,i didnt get it until 9pm.
DO YOU THINK THAT MORE SHOULD BE DONE TO EDUCATE THESE NUSES,MAYBE DO A DAFNE COURSE ITS ONLY 1 WEEK OUT OF THE TRAINING AND WOULD GIVE THEM A WORLD OF INFORMATION

nurses are on trained on diabetes for 3-4 hours out of their degree courses. lets remember they arent all dsns yeah? they have about the same knowlage as joe bloggs (ie none)
 
We should remember that for the majority of the patients they see will be T2. And MANY T2 don't realise they should avoid carb, they think it's just sugar. As do many nurses. We can't blame them, they're trying to do what's best for you

In hospital I maintained control of my own medication. It's just easier.

I am T2, and I think we need to educate the nurses.
After all, we wouldn't give a child a box of scalpels and say "leave them with him/her, its OK, he doesn't know any better!"

The NHS has a shortage of nurses as it is, can you imagine the time to send them on a DAFNE? Levels of care would drop for the test of the country!

Never mind the cost of it, it's just not feasible!

I was on an ENT ward for a tonsillectomy. I would never have expected the nurses to have done DAFNE. They were more concerned with my tonsils which was the issue at the time. Had I been in for something diabetes related I would have been elsewhere and then it would have been a different story. But then id speak to my DSN or consultant.

We can't expect the whole world to know or understand our own issues. I certainly don't know anything about cancer or MS or any thing other than diabetes

I would guess many regulars on this forum are pretty well clued up and may only learn a little on the DAFNE course. However, not everyone uses the forum and go with very little knowledge of carb counting etc. as for the nurses, I agree with Hale. They can't be expected to be experts on every condition/disease out there. That's why we have specialists.

The confusion comes unfortunately from the bolus/basal insulin regime which requires diabetics to match the insulin to the amount of carb that they eat (ideally using a ratio and not guesswork). Most nurses unless they have a relative who uses bolus/basal and ratios, will not have a clue on how to help people. Their knowledge about diabetes and food stems back to twice daily insulin regimes where people just adjusted the food to the action of the insulin which is far easier to do than do it the other way. When Ive gone into hospital, Ive always made it crystal clear that the nurses don't need to test my bg levels or adjust my insulin as I am more than able to do all that myself but then I have been type 1 for nearly 50 years so if I don't know what I am doing, then there's something wrong isn't there lol

I really want to find some geeky insulin related jokes to print on tshirts to wear all week. My boyfriend said I'm not allowed! Killjoy....

I'm actually going to do a basal test tonight. And I think I'm getting dawn phenomenon...... But AFTER I've been up and about for a bit lol so hopefully we will chat about that stuff a bit

Diabetic chat up lines - "hey baby, what's your type? "

Guy walks into a bakery and asks what he sells that is safe for diabetics. The baker answers "everything, as long as you don't put it in your mouth"

In an ideal world all nurses would be DAFNE trained to help hem understand type 1 diabetes better when working on the wards. Much like iHs I try and take control of my own injections and bg monitoring whilst an inpatient, last time I was in (2 years ago) they were fine with this and just asked what my bg readings were and how much insulin I'd injected.

Hi All .

When I was in hospital in march this year. [ shoulder op ]
The ward sister actually sought out a properly diabetes trained nurse for me .
She came from another ward and was to be my own named [Natalie] nurse
for the duration of my hospital stay .

She did all my BG testing and logged them all down , even went down to
the kitchen to collect my preordered diabetic friendly egg salad / ham salad's
She said herself there isn't enough of specifically trained nurses like herself .

Natalie did seem to know a lot of accurate bumpf correctly dealing with my BG levels
as they troughed and peaked after the surgery op .
I was allowed to keep all my insulin needs and she helped assist me [as only had one hand/arm]
I could self test my BG levels but they couldn't be logged down .
It had to be the hospitals own BG meter readings that she could record down .
The lancet gun only had one setting - it was vicious - left me with bruised /sore finger tips :thumbdown:

I was lucky that the ward sister found her and she was allocated as my own named nurse with a
good knowledge of diabetes needs and issues too .
I asked her if it was lack of funds with her type of training - she said yes plus time needed with the training .
Theory time in teaching is limited [nurses are allowed to choose their own special interest AFTER qualifying ]
Which is what she had done - chose diabetes after qualifying .
Basic module training is time limited and mandatory things set within the training format .
They have to squeeze so much into such limited time theorywise - on wards practical skill sets learning too .

I am not trying to make excuses for the lack of nurses trained properly in diabetes .
Just letting you know what Natalie explained ...

My mum is a practice nurse of 20+ years, not diabetic specialist but inevitably does come across diabetics of both types in her day to day work. She has openly admitted that she has learnt far more from helping me deal with my type 1 (I was diagnosed aged 11 and took most of the responsibility from very early on) than she ever has in professional training. As a student nurse myself, we spend very little time on diabetes - I'm doing children's nursing so type 1 is covered a bit more but type 2 barely at all, whereas the adult nurses learn a little about type 2 but almost nothing about type 1. It is massively time-restraints related.
