Type1.Why am I losing so much weight?

mist ring 111 now, A doctor will come out to you soon after. This is an emergency.

Have you dramatically ramped up your exercise at all recently, @mist ? (I have, and have dropped 3lb in 3 days - and I know that's why in my case.)

If not, are your blood sugars any different to what they have been since before the weight loss?

If neither of the above - and actually this would be a good idea anyway - I'd recommend a visit to the doctor.

Other autoimmune conditions such as Graves' disease (thyroid, been there, got the T shirt) and (I think) coeliac disease can present with symptoms such as dramatic weight loss. And so can many other things - get thee to a physician would be my earnest recommendation.

When I went low carb I lost some weight, but that stabilised fairly quickly. In fact, on LCHF my weight has been as stable as it's ever been - I'm very pleased with that.

Do keep us posted, @mist - you've got a lot of friends on here and I know we all want to help.

 
I appreciate you tagging me, but I'm not sure I can offer much help in this particular instance.

If this were an issue of managing diet, exercise, and insulin I would be able to help. However, it seems that this isn't related to that. Exactly as you said, high blood sugar levels aren't helping.

I consider myself to be very active and fitness is a major part of my life. However, I will never put fitness and activity before my blood sugar levels. Meaning, if my blood sugar is over 10mmol/l my primary focus is getting it below that number (although, very light exercise can assist with that).

I realize that doesn't help much, but there's simply too much at play here. If it were me, my primary focus would be getting my blood sugar down to normal levels as best I could.
 
What's your current blood sugar @mist and have you checked for ketones?

Carbs help maintain weight, but they need to be balanced correctly with insulin by carb counting and using ratios (not as hard or boring as it sounds).

If your BS is 15 or above and/or you have ketones, I'd ring for advice.
 
Hello mist, I have been reading your messages and I feel you need to see a doctor too if you are unable to visit a gp why not try the walk in centres, it is an alternative until you find a new Gp practice maybe they could do a referal for you? You will need to have a gp in order to obtain your insulin and other medication you may require. Kind regards. Kitt
 
Thanks everyone, your advice is greatly appreciated. with regards to my insulin, my ex partner whom I'm still friends with gets it for me, she arranged some kind of setup with my old GP whereby my repeat prescription is signed by "someone" I have no idea who and she collects the goodies for me from my local Tesco pharmacist, where she actually works, so there's no worries there.

Have I changed anything? Only my diet, maybe I have changed it too drastically? I'm basically just having salad with things like tuna or chicken and a slice of that Burgen bread that seems popular on here with a few members.

My levels last I checked were 8.7 which is obviously a far cry from the usual 20+ I normally get. Clearly I haven't figured out how much insulin I need with this new reduced carb diet I'm on.

I don't have keytones, if I did then I would be straight on the blower to 111

I'm guessing the LCHF diet works because the lower carbs keep your levels low but the high fat keeps your weight stable? Am I not eating enough fatty foods?

It is best to eat around 30% at least of your calories from fats. Maybe ever up till 70% fat are the double in calories Pro 1 gram than proteins and carbs . I also had problems believing I could eat that much fat and be Healthy But you can mist eat it like nuts and avocadoes and fresh coconut and lots of cream on your berries
 
More fat might help, add some and see what happens. If you are very underweight I would consider simply eating more (healthy) carbs too. As a T1 this shouldn't be a problem as you can adjust your insulin levels. If you have a fast metabolism (and it seems like you do) you will need more food to maintain your weight and you need to take this into account.

Have you checked your BGs today?

Low carb is a successful weight loss diet. For those that do not need to lose weight it has to be balanced with high fat and possibly extra protein or weight loss is likely to occur. However, 11lbs in 5 days is abnormal to say the least! Sounds like maybe a combination of insufficient calories from fats and something else going on.

Glad you have lowered those numbers!

I can't say I approve of the method you use to get your insulin though, or the fact you have absolutely zero medical care for your diabetes

What would make you happier? There isn't much I can do about it currently. I'm actively looking for a GP surgery in my area but none, thus far, will accept me onto their records.

Chemotherapy and radiotherapy are brutal and they do change the way our bodies used to behave ! Go and find a new gp or let one of us help you find one. , they shouldn't refuse to take a new patient and if they do they can be reported

I applied for a GP surgery on Friday, it's a bit out of the way as my local ones just said no outright when I told them I was removed from my old surgery for wanting to change appointments and that I may sometimes require home visits due to having trouble leaving the house in daylight hours ( long story )

This surgery didn't say no, rather they have sent me an application form which hopefully I'll get on Monday.

Yea, cancer sucks for sure, but it sure does open your eyes. I don't think of it as a negative experience and I wouldn't change anything. Weird? Probably..lol
