I have a meal at tea time and its high or low but in the next morning it's higher I can't understand it can anyone help

Tell us more about your situation. What are you eating? How large are the portions? Have you counted the carbs in what you're eating?

Sharing the specifics will help us better understand why you might be having issues.

Hi guys,

I have had a similar situation yesterday evening and this morning. My BG before tea was 5.8. I had a salad with tuna, chicken & egg followed by some fruit with cream. The fruit was mostly berries with about 4 chunks of melon. This morning before breakfast my reading was 7.9.

I'm recently diagnosed T2 and have just started on Metformin. 1 tablet 500mg a day since Wednesday. This is to be increased to 2 tablets a day after 7 days.

Best wishes, Jeff.

Hi. Don't worry too much about your reading first thing in the morning due to overnight liver dumps of glycogen (glucose). The best tests are 2 hours after a meal and take one just before the meal as well if you can afford the strips and want to know the full effect of the food. BTW melon is sugar-loaded so best avoided.

Hi Daibell,

Thanks for your advice. I managed to get a meter off the nurse and get strips etc on prescription. I'm currently testing twice a day. First thing in the morning, before breakfast and again just before tea, these are the tests that the nurse wants me to record and take with me to my next appointment. Additional tests won't be a problem. As for the melon, yes I've since found out about the high sugar content!

All very new to me at the moment, but I'm currently reading Dr David Cavan's book and the guide to type 2 diabetes magazine that I was given by the nurse.

Every day's a school day!

Regards, Jeff.

Agreeing with Daibell.

As a type 2, I'm lucky to get strips on prescription. I've given up on testing first thing in the morning as I seem to be one of these who who get "liver dump" regardless of how hard I try.

If I was rationing strips, I'd be more concerned about levels after eating rather than before. Readings before my evening meal are consistently in the range of 5 -6, whereas they vary widely after eating. I have a low tolerance to most carbs, but am gradually finding things that don't appear to spike. The latest are onion rings. - I'd never have considered onion rings a treat, but it just goes to show how individual we diabetics are.
