I have diabetes type2. I've been told by my GP that I do not need to test my blood sugar regularly, unless I am feeling unwell. Is that advice others have had? My blood sugars at my last quarterly blood check was 6.6 - I was told it should be below 6. Any advice?

Many of us get the same advice from our Health Care Professionals and just as many of us ignore it. I am certain that just about all members of this forum would suggest that you test yourself in order to find out what food you can safely eat. If your doctor won't supply a meter then buy one yourself.

Hi, welcome to the forum. Yes I agree you need to test, I don't see how you can be expected to improve the readings if you don't test to see how you are getting on.

Hi Sands, welcome. Most GP advice given to us T2s is, well, ****. Did he tell you to eat carbs with every meal as well?

Is the 6.6 an HbA1c in % or an equivalent BG in mmol/L?

Thank you everyone. I will ask my GP for the strips. I already have a tester but had asked my GP for the test strips - that is when she said I should only measure if I feel unwell etc. Sanguine, I think its HbA1c coz its my 3 monthly check. I will ask my GP again

How do you log your blood levels at the bottom of your replies? :))

Hi Sands

Agree with others about testing.
I was told it wasnt necessary and refused a meter. I bought my own. Tested the effect of foods on my blood sugar.

I was told to continue eating as I was as it was perfect! err so why was I diabetic then??
I found so-called healthy food such as porridge sent my sugar levels soaring.
I now eat low carb and have good control on my blood sugars.

There i loads of help on the forum so you have come to right place.
