Unable to lose weight

My GP and the Endo I see both reckon that the weight gain from gliclazide should be negligible and I certainly found this to be the case. I take 2 X 80 mg a day and have done for nearly 2 1/2 years now. It is more important right now to get your levels down and it certainly dropped mine pronto. My A1C went from 12.6 to 7 in 3 months along with low carbing.

Hey Stillo
If you eat clean and exercise but your still not losing weight the problem has to be somewhere else. I'm T1 but also a personal trainer. I would suggest upping your exercise. The cycling is great but usually people who are active in their job, as you are - walking a lot, very rarely have any kind of benefits as far as loosing weight is concerned. Try and incorporate some kind if higher intensity exercise (anerobic exercise rather than aerobic exercise) for 15-20 mins a day if you can. Keep a very close eye on your sugars and remember exercise can cause low sugars up to 8 hours afterwards!! and as I said if this does not work the reason must be something else! Good luck!

Hi! I have managed to loose weight ,by simply cutting down my portions and doing exercises everyday , I am on insulin and monitoring every day my sugar levels, my doc has been great and supporting me all the way, I am 58 and had two knee replacements, at my age its hard to loose weight, the exerciser I am using is a pulley system and you lay on the floor with hoops on you feet and your hands, its like doing pilates!! I am not on a diet, its hard work , but I have been doing it for 5-6 weeks and can see a difference. x

I have a friend with T2 that had a procedure called Endobarrier. She lost about 3 stones in a year but was immediately able to reduce her medication by half, metformin I think. She told me it is only available as a private procedure.

Hi Stillo

I really feel for you; I am 7 stone overweight and failed to lose weight on aktins or the swedish diet too. I was on glicazide and came off it cos of the weight gain issues - I lost nearly 20lbs within a month without really trying, which i put down to coming off the glicazide. I replaced it with chromium, which you can buy from the health shop. I take 2 in the evening - natural and no side effects. My sugars went down as a result of the weight loss i am sure.

my mom is type 2 and also became very ill on metformin. she ended up on insulin which is necessarily the best result but she has done over 20 years on it so far.

I do agree that it is better to focus on getting your sugar down and not on the weight. Although I didn't lose weight on atkin or the swedish diet, my sugars were a lot better and I have realised that this is more important than lots of weight loss. I am trying to get off januvia as well, although i do tolerate metformin ok. May I suggest avoiding any food that is processed so you can control the carbs/sugar you put into yourself?

I am gonna give the 'new' fasting diet a go where you eat 500-600 calories a day for two days in the week (not consecutive). I am starting next week so I will let you know how i get on. I will be monitoring my sugars closely to see if it has a positive effect.

Good luck with the doctor and well done for fighting your corner - doctor's seem to follow a script when it comes to medication!

Metformin will cause B12 deficiency which causes demyelination of nervous system and brain. Early symptoms are pain. Make sure your doctor tests you and monitors you for neurological and psychiatric symptoms. I would be insisting on B12 injections if I took metforming - before the deficiency happened.
