Type 1 Understanding Basal test results

Hi @iHs

Can I just ask you about this BIB, please?

I'm ~85Kg (when I don't snack ;)), and found out that Basal is now 24U per day (11U + 13U).
So, should I be averaging 8U for 3 meals? If I work out my carb ratio is 1:5, then I should be aiming for no more than 40g of carbs per meal?

That's tough going, but if it gets me in a good place - then it's worth a try.

Is that right, though?:)

lol

Lets presume that as you are trying to see through dense fog, you use 0.8u per 85kg bodyweight so that equals 68u. 34u for the basal which can be given twice daily in whatever amount you think you will need to use at breakfast and the rest to be used to cover the night. The other 34u can be divided up over 3 bolus doses so that makes 11u for each meal which would allow you to eat whatever you think your carb ratio will need to be. This is based on someone probably eating about 150-200g carb per day. Its not set in stone though as it can all be adjusted and manipulated to suit. Its just a fairly good starting point and many pumpers also start exactly the same way and then through bg testing we all adjust as we go along. This is also based around giving someone a bg level of about 6mmol

I think my best option is not be diabetic! Yeah - let's do that!

It does take some time to figure everything out with basal bolus. Twice daily insulins were so much easier to use as no one had to do a carb ratio or figure out their exact basal need. All that had to be done was bg test, inject the insulin and eat specific amounts of carb at a time that would stabilise the action of the dose injected.
