Unexpected High

I tested pre-dinner, got 12. A bit high, so added a little to the bolus for food.

Just tested again . 28.6 Arghhhh. Where the bleeping bleep did that come from?

Pump doesn't think it's blocked, has dinner bolus in memory as being delivered. I've just done an infusion set change although I don't think that's the problem. I've set another bolus to go, hopefully to correct the high. Now I'm worrying that this is a liver dump caused by going too low, and that changes my insulin sensitivity. Guess who's going to be staying up all night and testing

I've now taken twice the amount I would normally need to bring me down. Still at 15. That's 200u of insulin. Half from the vial-in-progress, half from a new vial in case I somehow managed to fry the reservoir in the pump.

The only thing I can think of is maybe I have a massive infection somewhere. But if its big enough to drive my blood glucose that high I should be really ill, and I'm not.

OK, what have I missed. I'm going to have to stay at 15ish, which I'm not happy about, but I dare'nt take any more.

Any ideas?

Hi @Seacrow, My pump educator always said:
IF the BSL is unexplainably high, insert a NEW needle insert device, tubing etc and put in a correction dose through this.
Then remove and examine the 'old' needle insert
. (Many times in my later experiences the needle insert plastic cannula has been found to be bent.)
For a some inexplicable-to-me reason the obstruction alarm does not sound
, but the bend is enough to restrict insulin reaching the subcutaneous site, OR
alternatively maybe the insulin the plastic cannula had worked loose and insulin collected under the sticky tape.
It is frightening as there is no reservoir of long-acting insulin working in one's body and the short-acting insulin from the pump is only going to give ? 6 hours of effect.
Also check for ketones if you can and if there is no obvious cause as above, ring for help., was the advice I was given.
The first time this happened to me I was new to the 90 degree needle insert device which had a spring device to shoot the insert in, I forgot the above advice from my educator and I ended up in Casualty where I was given a subcutaneous injection of insulin via a syringe and needle. (after a nasty needle into an artery to see whether I was acidotic from ketones). The plastic cannula was bent in three places !!!
I hope things settle quickly for you. Your DSN and doctor are your best allies for dealing with this.

Thanks @kitedoc , I had completely forgotten to check for ketones. Fortunately I've been lying still, so it's a 'real' result. 1.2. Not high enough to worry about. I plan on dropping into my diabetes clinic tomorrow and discussing this with one of the pump nurses.

I've come off the pump and switched to a pen now, so no basal insulin. I should be alright if I eat breakfast and bolus for that.
