Yesterday I was having perfect sugars around 6. That's good for me because my average is 8 so i'm brining it down slowly.

Anyway, It was looking like I was going to get through my first day with absolutely perfect sugars. But sadly it wasn't to be. 5 hours after dinner, 13.8 DOH!

Now i've got a number of reasons and wonder if anyone has anyone can spot the culprit.

For dinner i had turkey mince that I heated up from the day before. It had half a shallot in it about 25g if i remember. About 20g of mushrooms. Along with that i had 100g of runner beans boiled.

This should have worked out at about 5g of carbs I predicted. For dessert i made a pancake that was made of 1egg, 1 ryvita, cream, cinammon, nutmeg and a sweetner. This should have come to about 6g carbs.

So from that I shouldn't have had any problems. Now later on after dinner I had a can of fosters beer. I also had 2 glasses of cherry diet coke. So i'm left wondering if it was one of these, but am not sure.

Can of Foster's 500ml would have 15.5 gm carbs in it. This is worked out from 3.1gm carbs per 100ml.

What sweetener did you use ?

oooooooh! well that's it then. lol.

I read information saying that 1 pint of beer was fine. Guess not! Well that's ok, as long as i know the cause I know for next time.

The sweetner i use is a tablet one, hermesetas.

some authorities consider a glass of beer to be ok, but they are usually the one who don't want you to measure BG and would find a Bg of 10 acceptable anyway. for those of us who prefer tighter control, A glass of red wine would be better

It might well be fine for some, just not everybody. That's why we test so often. I can manage 2 pints of Guinness with a negligble effect on MY Bg levels. Try different beers.

what is vodka like? I could happily drink that instead of beer.

I don't really like wine.

.
Testing blood sugar to determine which carbs are bad for a particular person is a non-low carb concept .........not that I disagree with testing. Actually I agree with it.

Low carbing against diabetes assumes that all carbs are bad.

Beer and ale carry a significant carb load. Not just that, both contain heavy loads of insulin compromising gluten protein. The difference between a diabetic who responds heavily to beer, and one who responds lightly lies in their insulin reaction to gluten. If it were purely about sugars, the barley sugar content in beer, combined with the converted alcohol, would produce roughly the same blood glucose increase in all diabetics.

The practical differences between wine and vodka-and-water are........ Wine contains dye and vinegar (acetaldehyde). Both have metabolic consequences in some people. Some of the detrimental effects attributed to acetaldehyde are controversial, with many people arguing they should be attributed to ammonia, a byproduct of acetaldehyde breakdown.

There are better science links, but this one offers a good explanation.

Bottom line? You do react to beer. If you must drink alcohol then do it right. Try vodka and water.

Low carbers do not assume all carbs are bad. The starchy ' empty' carbs are of no particular use to a diabetic as they raise blood glucose levels with no other benefit. The other carbs, such as the ones in fruit and vegetables also have micro-nutrients which are of benefit to the body.

Testing blood sugar to determine which carbs are bad for a particular person is a non-low carb concept .

ALL diabetics need to test when they are newly diagnosed to find which foods they can and cannot eat. It does not matter which diet you are on you need to test otherwise you will not know how certain foods affect your blood sugars.

Excellent info guys. Well I guess it's just a case of trial and error then. I don't plan to drink much, but my birthday is coming up this week and so i'll be having a few.

I don't think carbs are bad, but I do know humans survived for millions of years without them, so there is no harm in me not having them either.
