Unexplained spikes in BS

Not sure that smiley emoticon worked exactly as I wanted it to... was supposed to be smiley face throughout!!! Ah well... thank you so much everyone for your input. Really, so very helpful. I need to disappear for a few hours now, but if I go quiet I haven't disappeared and will catch up with reading all posts later... thank you again tons )

PS .... "no medication - no portion control"... brilliant. Love it. You guys are all inspirational - you've given me the confidence to try this new approach. Thank you...

Hello again my full-fat friends! Just a little update from newby corner... though I'm not sure where to start. Firstly, a big 'THANK YOU' to you all... for your input and guidance and for mentioning about the doctor who is on this forum (SouthportGP) and who is amazing to have taken such an active interest in getting his patients' treatment right and exploring every avenue before taking the 'further medication' route. Deserves an OBE. The findings of his research have been a real eye-opener.
And you are right. Mum now has a big smile on her face. We think of this new full (healthy) fat, low carb way of eating a 'regime' rather than diet. It certainly doesn't feel like we are going without. No nibbling, no hunger pangs, both feeling a lot brighter (I'm doing it too in spite of not being diabetic, feel much better for it). We eschewed porridge and visible carbs for breakfast, exchanged for the ff strained Greek yog and strawberries or a couple of cherries.

Her porridge breakfast with little piece of banana as recommended by the nurse always spiked her BS levels to around 13-14mmol. One morning last week, under the new regime, levels were 8.7mmols before breakfast and 8.4mmol two hours later. At the end of the day at 10.30pm, two hours after our last snack it was 7.9mmol… I feel we had a relatively indulgent day of food… and the most incredible thing… we had workmen in all day and with the upheaval, she had actually forgotten to take two lots of her medication. I’m not saying this is a clever thing to do, she never usually forgets, it’s just we had so much on – I take this as a very hopeful indication. A good start.

I do occasionally find that often her fasting BS is up - sometimes around 12mmol... before eating, in the morning. Query 'Dawn Effect/Phenomenon?" Any advice? She takes 2 metformin, 2 gliclazide with her evening meal... some internet articles suggest taking meds after eating in the evening to try and suppress this effect. We will ask our GP but wondered if you had any input in the meantime please?

We have been on the new regime for a couple of weeks now. In the first week mum lost 5 lbs and I lost 2 lbs but our weight seems to have stabilised. We would both like to lose a little more (people would say by looking at me that I don't need to lose weight, but half a stone would get me down to my ideal "racing snake" weight so I'm happy!) Mum would like to lose maybe 2 stone more - even though her weight has now stabilised, her rings are all very lose and she has noticed a physical difference round her tummy. We are hoping to breach the plateau soon! Again, all advice welcome.

Happily, this does feel like a sustainable routine... thank you so much for taking the time and trouble to discuss with us... xx

So pleased for you!

So pleased for you!
Thank you - a lot of credit goes to the guys here on the forum for pointing us in the right direction and giving constructive advice about living with type 2 - so grateful. I expected results overnight, and there are some clear indications of progress . On odd days there can also of course be confusion!! But that's diabetes for you. I now realise that sustained low, long term results may take longer to achieve and stabilise than 3 weeks but happy to keep going!
