When your BGS are better controlled the thirst will go. You should be under 6 most of the time, the exception being post meal times. At 2hours you should try to come in with levels under 7.8, ideally under 6.7.
You need to test your BGs before and after meals and rule out foods which raise your blood sugar levels too high. They are likely to be the "white" carbs - potatoes, rice, pasta, bread, cereals, all the fun stuff... It is a process called Eating to your Meter.
Exercise can also help to bring your BGs down as can medication.
