Morning guys,

I have a hosp appoint today and I'm really unsure what to expect. I've tried really hard to get my HBa1c into the 7's (and I've done it) from where they were (10'sand higher).

I'm just about done with trying to lower things more - struggling to stick to low carb and I dont want to massively increase my insulin either due to feeling like I'm losing hypo sensitivity (3.3 and only feeling a bit hypo).

I'm not sure what to expect today, I've never been to hosp and not come away feeling like ****, does it ever get to a point where you've done good enough to get by for a while?

Morning Engineer,
The bottom line is you have tried and have in the process made massive improvements in your control. So very positive well done.
Rome was not built in a day, so have a sit back and reflect on what you have achieved. Listen to what you are told and if you disagree or do not understand what is being said then say so.
Perhaps also point out to the staff how negative their dealings with you make you feel.
Can you take someone with you for moral support?

Thanks @CarbsRok.

No I cant take anyone with me, very much on my own with it all while trying to support everyone else. Just like you say want to sit back for a bit and just deal with it day to day.

They are there to help you not to punish you.

Try and keep in your mind the fact that you are paying them for their professional services. If they are not up to the job you can tell them off - you are the one in control!

Always push for answers to how can things be improved and what are the options.

Head up, shoulders back; you're the boss!

You've come a long way! Give yourself a well deserved pat on the back for that.
What is your target blood glucose level? Due to loss of hypo awareness I was recommended to aim for 8. Not sure what exactly that would equate to in a HBA1C reading; but I'd imagine that if you are hitting the 7s for it you are doing well.

Are you keen to get your levels down lower? Would the diabetes team recommend you take it any lower with lack of hypo awareness?

Remember they are a team there to help and assist you with your diabetes. You aren't there to impress them.

I'd suggest if for now you can maintain where you are at; don't push yourself to lower things any further. I'd hate to see you suffering burnout from pushing yourself too hard. You've worked hard to get where you are now, keep up the good work. x

Eng dont worry...... an a1c in the low 7s is good but I suspect that yours will be in the mid to high 6s judging your awareness of the hypo feeling..

I've been quite fortunate in that my visits are always pleasant but I don't go there expecting to be lectured by anyone..........

the way I see it is they are there to take your blood, test it, then give you the results..............its then up to you to make the changes you feel you need to improve things, with there help if you choose......

my results are not perfect and I know why..........general living is why and my team know that's how I think and they are happy with that...

getting in to the 7s is really good so well done............try not to let the diabetes get in the way of life too much.........

It was 7.7 iHs I haven't had it done since and they won't do it on the day (dinosaurs!). On a positive note I've pinched two (yes two!!) alternative monitors to see if I like either.

On a separate note I'm looking to train a Diabetic alert dog. Anyone got any real experience or anything?

I hope you had some words of encouragement today for all the effort it takes to see a reduction in HbA1c and achieve and maintain good control. It is a pretty thankless task most of the time, the most encouraging words I have ever had from my pump consultant were " you are doing alright".

You know how you feel and if you are happy to maintain things as they are. It took me years of trying to get my HbA1c into the 6's, it seemed to require super human effort to reduce it by even 0.2 % once I had eventually broken through the 7% brick wall.

Reducing your HbA1c like you have is great work and requires a pile of effort so well done from me.

Considering with what you started with for an A1c 7.7 is brilliant well done you.

It's a big improvement from being in the 10's, hope your appointment went well today and your feeling much better in yourself

Yeah I am thanks guys. Years of being told I'm not a good enough diabetic have left their mark and I find I get extremely defensive and apprehensive about appointments now

1} Congrats on the improvements.
2}re Diabetic alert Dogs, this blogger is trying the same http://diabeticalien.blogspot.co.uk/ perhaps you could contact her!
