Hi was informed by nurse two weeks ago that i am borderline prediabetic. I know i have also been underweight and never very good at eating properly, im a smoker which i know isnt good either. I did a fasting test this morning and the result was 5.9 i hadnt eaten for 12 hours. I retested after i ate a sandwich at lunch time (two hours after eating) and the result was 8.8 mmol/L just really want to know if this is normal

'Normal' in what way? A rise of 2.9 after eating would be within the expected zones of normality, after a sandwich, that probably included a couple of slices of bread and whatever filling. I think most of us would be pretty happy with those numbers after that meal. But we might be able to give you a better answer if you elaborate a bit on your question.

Hi Boo sorry it all started 3 months ago when i was really ill with pleurisy i had blood test taken and it came back that my inflammation marks were all high. Didnt hear anything more after id taken antibiotics until two weeks ago when i was told about having high blood glucose levels. Ive been back to the nurse as im now very tired all the time and by the middle of the afternoon i have pains in both legs when walking and asked about this and she said im under weight and need to bring my blood glucose down . Just wondered what a normal result is ...

Do you mean what would be a 'normal' reading for a non-diabetic person? There's clearly a bit more to diagnosing diabetes than a couple of random home tests (there's a margin of error in home meters, they're not as accurate as venous blood tests), so you'd really need to discuss this with your medics - especially if you've just had a big infection, it can play havoc with blood chemistry, including blood glucose. If those tests were taken around the time of your infection, it might be very different now.

These are the NICE recommended target blood glucose levels:

Non-diabetic -
Before Meals: 4.0 to 5.9 mmol/L 2 Hours after meals: under 7.8 mmol/L
Type 2 diabetes - Before Meals: 4 to 7 mmol/L 2 Hours after meals: under 8.5 mmol/L
Type 1 diabetes - Before Meals: 4 to 7 mmol/L 2 Hours after meals: under 9 mmol/L

Hi everyone has a different level at which they like there BS to sit, for myself I like to be in the low 5s fasting and two hours after a meal but others are happy in the 6s or 7s. To avoid complications it is best to try and aim for non diabetic numbers as those readings are slightly high for a borderline pre diabetic. It would be well worth making an appointment with your GP to get your HbA1c test redone once you are completely well and if you have the means keep testing your BS as it might give you a better picture of any spikes or lows you may be experiencing. Please keep us informed and if you have any further questions don't be afraid to ask.
