Hi All

Yesterday I was approached by a work colleague to see if I would sell my insulin to her body building friend! Of course I said absolutely no way.....surely a non diabetic would die or become incredibly ill if they took insulin?

Just couldnt believe the brass balls of asking!

Insulin abuse can be part of a steroid abuse regime.

I'm sure you would be breaking some kind of law somewhere if you sold your insulin, don't know what law mind... Well done on telling them to do one!
 
Shortly after diagnosis I did some research on insulin. Google got to me to two forums, one on how to commit suicide using insulin, second for body builders on how to dose insulin. Shocking that healthy people would like to use it!
 
agree with everyone that has posted so far.

Insulin is a life saving but potentially life threatening drug in the wrong hands
 
Agreed. There have been a number of stories of people overdosing exogenous insulin in an attempt to hugely improve muscle gains when bodybuilding.

Dr Google has taught me a lot, and I've certainly read that sometimes body builders will use insulin to bulk up - either by injection or (more safely) drinking sugary drinks after a heavy lifting session to make the body release its own insulin. When combined with protein and sugar this is supposed to cut recovery time and repair muscle faster.

I'm not legally qualified (or medically qualified, for that matter), but I think it's the 1968 Medicines Act that says only pharmacists can supply prescription medication.
 
It's definitely illegal as it's a prescription drug so you've done the right thing!!

I think you could also be done by the NHS for fraud as you're using your free prescriptions for someone else and profiting from it.
Glad you had the sense to say no, scary that you were asked - implies that there might be diabetics out there that are willing to do it
 
I was asked the same question well over 20 years ago, so it seems it's been going on a long time, I of course declined.
 
I was asked to sell my syringes once at school ( the old orange topped ones). Never been asked about insulin though..Luckily had the sense even back then to say no, pretty good idea where they would have been headed!
 
Thought I'd chime in here with a useless factoid.

Steroid use, even when medically prescribed, often causes hyperglycaemia. Which over long periods of time isn't that healthy, as we all know! So to counteract that, people who use steroids for body building may need insulin to get their BG back down to normal levels. Steroids for getting massive muscles, insulin to keep their sugars normal.

I don't think the insulin alone will make much of a difference to a body builder (other than dangerous hypo's), though I wouldn't mind if mine gave me a little more muscle mass!

I used to work in a cardiac intensive care so know lots of useless medical facts. Sadly very little on anything really relevant to diabetes though!
