Unusually High Readings

Hi everyone,

Just wondering if anyone can give any advice...

I have been diagnosed with Type 1 for just over a year. For the vast majority of that time, my levels have been spot on...if anything a little on the low side.

Recently, I've been having problems with both unexpected high morning readings and then weird unpredictable high daytime readings. I know things like stress, illness and spoiled insulin may be to blame, or a drastically changed ratio which I haven't kept up with...

I have had a bit of a cold recently - I'm fine, just a bit sniffly and am carrying on as normal. Can even really really mild colds etc have such effects on BG levels?
Also, is there any way for me to tell if I have some spoilt insulin perhaps.

Would really appreciate any advice!...its driving me mad!

David :)

Colds affect my BG more than ANYTHING else. It's totally bonkers. Crazy that something so very very minor has such a huge effect...

Jack pretty much spells it out for you.

You may be at the end of your honeymoon period. I have been been type 1 for about 9months now, and i think my honeymoon is ending as i have started to notice my usual ratio is no longer covering my meals, and my basal was starting to get on the wrong side lol (ie - higher morning readings)

OR it may be because of your cold. Cold tend to cause the BS to get a bit out of whack, in which case, just do you best and when your cold goes away you will likely see yourself getting back into your groove.

OR it could be both..

Treat the cold and blood sugars as though you are sick, and when that has gone monitor to see if there are patterns showing, for example, your basal no longer covering your basal needs, your I:c ratio no longer covering meals.

If post cold, this is the case, then either talk to your diabetes team, or if you are confident, adjust your insulins yourself.

The cold can raise your BG quite a bit, but if it continues it may just be that you've come to the end of your Honeymoon period.

I always noticed significant changes during the cold when on MDI where my BG would be constantly elevated. Since starting the pump I've had the cold a couple of times and it seems to be more of a sporadic rise.
