Guys trying to get as much info and different takes on what people advice about the dreaded urine testing strips as I want to speak to my Dr about them as they are stressing me out. I have been Lucy enough to get some advice from other sources but I want to be sure I know what I am saying.

So when I was diagnosed some four or five weeks ago I was given urine strips now she the nurse said my aim was to be in the neg or 1.1 bit !
I have done as she said and tested my urine at different time throughout the day and every time it is 1.1 ?

I am not eating much as many of you know now my BG numbers are looking okay all things considered, I am fasting at 5.4 to 6most days the odd day I have seen a 7i then take my BG TWO hrs after food and again between the 6 and 7 ish mark I tend to be rounding the day of at 7.4 soi thought I was doing well and could sigh and pat my back !!! Nope nurse says that regardless of my BG whitch she doesn't want me to take I am still too high and my urine shows that !!!

Right please please listen to this bit why is it that apart from when I was diagnosed and the surgey said my water sample was full of glucose the past two water tests have been clear and negative but mine at home are 1.1the nurse says the one they do is not as sensitive ???

Guys I am doing everything possible to tackle this but just feel like two steps forward twenty back .

Do any of you have experience of the urine strips please if you do share them with me as I see the Dr tomorrow .
I I just feel the my two hour readings mean nothing and the nurse just goes on about the friggin urine strips but how the hell can the ones at the surgey be less sensitive if that's the case what's the point of using them ? Hope someone gets back to be so glad to have found you guys x now glass of red wine or not

if you are doing very low carb, you will have nutritional ketones in your urine and are nothing to worry about. they are wanted.
this might be throwing your nurse off who is thinking T1 stuff where high BG and ketones could lead to DKA, a very serious complication

Hey Hun no the nurse tells me everytime I see her I am type 2 . She wants me to do the urine testing strips and I am getting 1.1 she then tests when I see her and at I start a was showing glucose but since then the last two have been negative . She says the testing strips we do at home are more sensitive than the ones they do at the surgery ? Mine have always been 1.1 my BG numbers have come down so I am utterly confused, she wasn't worried and doesn't see me again until end of July when we wil see if my diet is working with bloods. So should I be worried then ??

relax, you are doing a wonderful job and it's a wonder the nurse doesn't tell you to see her next year. The only thing I am certain about is that you don't have DKA, I was thinking that the nurse was confused because AFAIK 1.1 isn't a measure of urine sugar and is a measure of ketone.

ketones are produced when you burn fat. If you are on a diet, you will produce ketones. this is good and this is you.
A 'normal' person who doesn't diet can have about 0.5 just through normal stuff, a low carber can run at 3.0 or more ketones

a T1 diabetic without enough insulin will burn fat and produce ketones because there is not enough insulin to metabolise the sugar. so they would have high BG and ketones. this is bad.

Give me the name of the urine strips she gave you and I'll look them up, but

Give me the name of the urine strips she gave you and I'll look them up, but the ones I use have 2 pads on them, one for sugar and one for ketones. on the side of the bottle are the 2 scales to read the result

thank you so much Hun this is all so new to me . I have the test pack in front of me they are medi test glucose strips, the leaflet inside says testing for glucose in the urine. There is one pad on the sticks and it starts with neg , 1.1,2.8 and so on . Mine stay in the 1.1 .
I am taking my BG morning fasting and then every two hrs and I stop taking at night as I have other care needs and to be honest I am shattered.
thank you so much for telling me I am doing well I needed to hear that as I feel so rundown and my drs are useless. I do suffer from anxiety and they blame everything on that they don't seem to see that I have worked my but off these past few weeks to get my BG down when I was diagnosed it was with a fasting of 16 .
Any advice on these strips would be good I saw the dr today about my bone condition and I did ask her what they did and she says they re to measure the glucose in my urine .

do you think I am testing enough . Worried my BG could be high through the night ? But my morning fasting one is 6 ish ? I don't want to be testing through the night as I have enough other stuff going on and it does stress me. Little.
My husband agrees with you though he can't see why she just doesn't want to see me next year ?

I just got my meter out and looked at it, I've used 3 strips this month. av once every 4 days, I have been confidant. I used more than 100 the first week I had the meter. your bloods are fine "I am fasting at 5.4 to 6most days the odd day I have seen a 7i then take my BG TWO hrs after food and again between the 6 and 7 ish mark I tend to be rounding the day of at 7.4"
put your test strips away and only bring them out to test a new meal before and 2 hrs after and one before breakfast a week and one before tea a week, doesn't need to be on the same day. worry about something else

this site is a learning curve, I found out about your glucose urine strips and 1.1 is normal [mind you I'm still confused why that is as I don't understand the scale] and I don't know what your nurse is on about when she says " Nope nurse says that regardless of my BG which she doesn't want me to take I am still too high and my urine shows that !!!

Thank you I don't know what I would do without you x your right if 1.1is normal wht is she talking about ? . I am going to put them away and have a glass Of wine in the garden . I think I need to ask her when I see her again what she is talking about as I don't. Know where she is coming from. THank you for everything Hun x here if you ever need anything x

Glucose doesn't appear in urine until BGs get to around 9-10 mmol/l, so it would be better to aim for negative if possible. We had to test our wee in the olden days before BM sticks and then blood meters were invented. ;)

Sounds like you are doing well. Just be aware that urine is normally around 4hours old on average so not overly accurate as a snapshot of how your levels are at that moment in time. I have wee sticks that are multitest as I am very prone to urine infections and having to call the out of hours coz I was burning up and in pain even though I knew it was probably just wee infection again on the weekend was getting silly so I have my own strips now and Dr gave me antibiotics to keep on "standby". They also test for glucose and if I know I've been high in the night then I test my urine the next day at same time as testing bg using my monitor, the monitor will often say it's okay but the wee sticks will show maxed out +++++ lol also as poster above says your kidneys tend to not spill out sugar into your wee until it's over 10mmol/l in a healthy kidney.
However if that is what your hcp has told you to do and you are happy I wouldn't worry :)

Hi Robert , Thank you here is my confusion please excuse me I am new to all of this the glucose strips have been 1.1 all along and the nurse keeps saying it means my BG is running at 9 or 10 but I am taking my BG every two hrs after a meal and I am not getting those numbers. Also someone very kindly looked it up for me and the information sheet that you get with the strips says 1.1 is normal.
I am working so hard at this I am hardly eating and I just don't get it ???

So confused do these urine sticks mean I am not doing so well then ? Don't know if I am coming are going my BG say I am doing fine but if my urine strips are saying different what do I do ???

Hi Sharon Anne

As sunday 1980 says, the glucose in your urine is a few hours out of date. Also, it could be more concentrated, depending how often you go to the loo or how much water you drink.

It's best to use your blood meter in preference to urine sticks, as the meter is more accurate (although I know strips are costly if not prescribed).

Thank I know I sound a little over the top but I am disabled with other lifelong conditions and I think this on top as sent me a little over the top. My surgery have not really been very helpful and my nurse seems hell bent on me using these sticks. I saw her last week and she said she is not interested in what my BG monitor says she is only concerned with the strips.
Mind you work this one out when I was diagnosed a few weeks ago there was a lot of glucose in my urine when she tested it but on the last two visits there was none , so I questioned the sticks I was using and said can't you just test it when I come in and she says the strips we use at home are more sensitive than the ones they use in surgery ?? That makes no sense to me .
