Using holidays for appointments

Hi all.

Please could someone try to clear this up for me please, I have been hunting around for an answer but not found one yet.

I am type one on insulin.

My employer employs less than 50 people so are not obliged to allow me to take time off unpaid for appointments. I have read that employment law states that employers employing over 50 people are expected to let employees take emergency days for appointments etc.

I have also read that an employer is expected to take reasonable steps for disabled people.

Are type 1 diabetics covered by DDA in the workplace?

Therefore should I demand that my employer let me take unpaid time from work for appointments?

Your comments would be appreciated.

Your employer can't stop you from attending a hospital appointment, they can request that any doctor's appointment is made either outside of working hours or at a time when it cause mimium dispruption...

It is totally the manager disgression to whether they let you have paid leave, unpaid leave or insist that you use any remaining holiday to cover the appointment..

Type I is covered by DDA (or whatever the new Act is called) but as Jopar says, it comes down to manager's discretion. I've had to take holiday or make up all the time for recent weekly pump progress appointments, even though we're usually 'allowed' up to an hour for medical appointments.
