Type 2 VEG

Hi, there are plenty of vegetarians, and I think some vegans, here on the forum, and they have a section of their own here, so have a browse.

I am a vegetarian .... then I got diabetes .. it did not cause my diabetes .. I LCHF now and feel great .. Personally I think the LCHF way of eating is easer if your veggie as you don't overdo the protein.

Hi there

I would like to know your thought on being a vegetarian and a diabetic
The food is great. I am a lacto-ovo vegetarian. Since being diagnosed T2 two years ago, I have been able to maintain a non-diabetic hba1c on minimal meds.

So long as you 'eat to your meter' its no problem at all. I eat low carb vegetarian which many seem to think is impossible but I suspect those people are confusing low carb with paleo :)

I know animal P causes a spike but I also know I need P for maintenance and repair. I cannot eat dairy or legumes (too high carb) or soy (digestion) so where do you get enough P? I would love to know. I mostly eat tuna turkey and eggs. Gauc for BF (veg) and just one piece of turkey lunch and half can of tuna dinner (varies but pretty standard) . Do you count P grams to make sure you have enough? I have often though of going veg but scared I won't get enough protein and can't fih=gure out how without high carb vegs

Are you unable to eat any soy or dairy at all @Kristin251 ? Some people who suffer digestive issue get along OK with the fermented type of soybeans (tempeh) as it's good for the gut bacteria. Some people with lactose intolerance also do OK on good quality yoghurt. Nuts are another pretty good source

PS

You could also add extra whites when cooking eggs - the whites contain most of the protein.

yup, no dairy except butter and no soy. I will stick to small amounts of fish poultry and eggs I guess. I would LOVE to be able to eat yogurt!

If your diet is already that limited it would be tough to go veg. Have you tried the Coyo coconut yogurt? I'm not a great fan of any yogurt myself but the Coyo is pretty popular & it's dairy free. Not very high in protein apparently but still - it's a sort of yogurt :)

Yeah, No coconut either! I think it was wishful thinking on my part. No dairy, soy, legumes are too carby, etc. No gluten or grains either. That's OK. I do like my protein so I guess I will just keep portions small.

I just eat above ground veg, fat like avocado, EVOO, mayo and whatever comes with my P and small amounts of protein. It's not bad and BS is good so I guess this is what I should do

Thanks so much for your help! I was just wondering how you get enough protein and keep BS and digestion good. I guess it would be near impossible for me

I am veg :) have been diagnosed And veg for about the same amount of time ~10 years.

I think that anyone, not just diabetics, need to plan carefully when choosing to go veg.

In the beginning, I removed meat & seafood and just added more carbs. So if we were having meat, potatoes and veggies for dinner, I'd leave out the meat and add more potato and veg. This was obviously a terrible idea. I just simply hadn't done my homework as to what sources of protein were veg friendly. I ended up going to a nutritionist and it was really only there that I learned how to properly balance my meals. Finding plant based protein sources, and possibly adding a B12 supplement is good. I don't take B12s all the time, just when blood work shows it as being low.

I will say that a very good thing about becoming veg was that I couldn't eat at many fast food places anymore. Places like McDonald's and KFC didn't have veg options, so it was easy to shake them off.

I wouldn't be able to go back now. It seems kind of silly, but I don't think I remember what meat tastes like. I will have an imitation meat time product and say "oh wow, this really tastes like chicken!" And then a non vegetarian will try it and tell me it tastes noting like chicken.
