Vegatarian diets

I was assessed as being diabetic last week. Still learning what foods to avoid or to have. I'm not seeing doc or dietician for at least two weeks. In meantime, have given up the two bottles of wine a night, given up salt, began to walk rather than take bus.

I htink that I have to eat as much low GI foods as possible. So am now eating a portion of different types of beans each day, eating bigger portions of veg (esp brocalli, cabbage), eat lots of poridge in any case. Don't eat white bread. Eating considerably less meat and much more fish esp pilchards, mackeral and trout.

I'm the person that does the cooking in my house and I was on verge of converting to a more vegetarian diet in any case.

Could someone, please, confirm that I'm more or less on the right path until I see the dietician.
Thanks.

Different beans have different carb levels. Have a look on the packaging to see what they are.

This is where testing before and two hours after a meal comes in. If you test before the meal and the level is,say for argument's sake, 6.6 then if you test after the meal,( 2Hrs ) and it is back to the 6.6 or near it then you are managing to tolerate these beans OK.

Porridge is another one that some can tolerate and some can't. I can't it sends my Bg rocketing. Again this is where testing comes in.

There are no carbs in natural meat but if you are going vegetarian then that will not concern you.

It takes a while but you will work out a diet that is best for you.

My Dear Fariend Vegetarians have different dietary practices, but most can be categorized into one of the following groups:

1 Lacto-ovo-vegetarians eat plant foods, milk, milk products and eggs, but avoid flesh foods (meat, poultry and fish).
2 Lacto-vegetarians eat plant foods, milk and milk products, but avoid eggs and flesh foods.
3 Ovo-vegetarians eat plant foods and eggs, but avoid milk, milk products and flesh foods.
4 Pesco/pollo-vegetarians eat meats like seafood and chicken, but do not eat other meats, such as beef, lamb, and pork.
5 Total vegetarians, also called vegans, eat plant foods only.

It's impossible for me to truly low low carb and be veggie.

OK I don't actually count the carbs in my veggies, but I would guess I have to be reduced rather than low carber, I don't eat any rice or wheat products but I can get away with some potatoes. I do eat beans and I can get away with quite a lot really as long as I don't mix them with other carbs.

Surprisingly I can eat a reasonable amount of peas and sweetcorn, but can't eat fruit.

I keep saying this but aren't our human bodies wierd?

ShyGirl, I'm not a vegetarian so tell me to keep my nose out if you like but have you tried eating just a few kidney beans as part of a mixed bean salad type meal?

I have found that I can tolerate most foods its just that some I can only eat a very small portion of

Hi there Shygirl,
I am a low carber and a lifetime veggie and have found there are some black soy beans that you can buy in tins (on-line only at the moment in the UK) that are low carb, they are a bit like black kidney beans in size and texture.
Personally , I do not use soy products if I can avoid them as they upset my digestion.
You can also buy some tinned Epicure brand Bijoux Vert lentils which seem to be the lowest carb tinned beans around. These are a green/continental lentil type of bean.

I have adapted to a low carb diet from one high in beans and lentils and grains. It has taken me some years to stop reaching for packets of lentils in the supermarket though

My dietician's advice was to eat lots of whole grains and pulses which I had been doing for 30 years and probably caused the diabetes in the first place. I have now persuaded her that my new low carb diet works for me.
