Hi All

Since disgnosis in October last year, have been put on 4 x metformin and 1 x sitagliptin. Have blood under control, levels between 5-8 and HBA1C at 52.

For the last few days i have been feeling slightly under the weather, almost a little coldy, but nothing has developed. During this time my readings have been really high, generally around 10 on waking but going down to 8 or so quite quickly, but within eating almost anything am getting readings of 14-18.

I am really concerned at these levels - could it be due to feeling a bit under the weather or could the diabetes have got worse in the last few days?

Very worried.

Simon

Hello Simon,

Illness, bugs, viruses and so on do affect blood sugar levels like that, as does stress. If you know you are still eating properly and not falling off the waggon with your food, then you should get back to normal once you are better. Worrying about it unduly may make it worse. Take care.

It's usual for oncoming illness or even feeling 'under the weather' to affect BGs. Stress will also do it.

What are you eating to spike from 8 to 14?

Well that would spike me. I'm guessing that illness and/or stress affect insulin production and/or resistance.

Perhaps lay off the carbs a bit more than what you usually eat until things have settled down?

thanks, i guess you are right. didnt realise illness would affect me so much. was worried the T2 had got worse all of a sudden

Keep testing though - if it doesn't help then you should see your GP about it.

I will do. At what levels does BG become dangerous? I know its harmful to nerves etc over 7.5, but for immediate danger? Does anyone know?

Not entirely sure as I've not experienced it (knowingly - who knows what it was at times before I was diagnosed!) but somewhere in the 20s I suspect.

Hi. Yes, illness does cause elevated levels and I've suffered from this. Blood sugar into the 20s and 30s can be dangerous. In the teens you need to take action to reduce it but it's unlikely to be danerous
