Hi Marilyn
Thanks for the welcome. I hope your Hb1Ac test results come back good, im sure they will.
Glad i came on here before going to my first appointment with diabetic nurse. Thanks to my good friend Gudrun who pointed me in the right direction
. So tomorrow we will see what the nurse says to me about diet .. will be interesting... I wonder if i will be offered the X-Pert course? Did you get any glucose testing equipment , or at least strips, on prescription from your practice?
Sheila
Hi Sheila,
My Doctor offers 100 strips per year on prescription, but this isn't enough, so I have to buy my own.
I found the first day of the X-pert course very interesting, and believe it or not they actually admit that carbs have a drastic affect on bg for T2 Diabetics, I was amazed, so something must be gettting through, although they don't agree with self testing but will support you if you want to do it. Apparently they don't advise testing because most people don't understand the numbers and panic, but I suggested that the NHS should educate people to understand the numbers instead of just saying they are ok or they need to be reduced and dismiss them until their next HBa1c test. They did agree with me, but whether they are in a position to do anything about it, who knows.
Looking at your info, we are very similar in age I am 61 (will be 62 on Friday), I am retired, I also walk my dog twice a day. (Great huh, just when you want a quiet life after working for most if it, you get saddled with this lot lol).
Also, don't wait to be offered the X-pert course, look it up on line and book yourself on one, you don't need a referral from your Doctor, but you will need the results of your HBa1c test. The Course is six weeks, 1 day a week, and each session lasts 2.5 hours. I didn't think much of their refreshments (Tea/Coffee & Biscuits!!!) good job I took my own snack (50g mixed nuts).
If you need any further info please let me know, only glad to help.
Take care
