Very newly diagnosed

Hi Sheebee and welcome. All I can add to the excellent advice above is that I stopped craving carbs within a week or two of going LCHF, when I initially thought "how am I going to stop eating my lovely bread - waaahh!". Now I have an occasional small slice of wholemeal with eggs at breakfast.

Hi Marilyn

Thanks for the welcome. I hope your Hb1Ac test results come back good, im sure they will.

Glad i came on here before going to my first appointment with diabetic nurse. Thanks to my good friend Gudrun who pointed me in the right direction . So tomorrow we will see what the nurse says to me about diet .. will be interesting... I wonder if i will be offered the X-Pert course? Did you get any glucose testing equipment , or at least strips, on prescription from your practice?

Sheila

Hi Sheila,

My Doctor offers 100 strips per year on prescription, but this isn't enough, so I have to buy my own.

I found the first day of the X-pert course very interesting, and believe it or not they actually admit that carbs have a drastic affect on bg for T2 Diabetics, I was amazed, so something must be gettting through, although they don't agree with self testing but will support you if you want to do it. Apparently they don't advise testing because most people don't understand the numbers and panic, but I suggested that the NHS should educate people to understand the numbers instead of just saying they are ok or they need to be reduced and dismiss them until their next HBa1c test. They did agree with me, but whether they are in a position to do anything about it, who knows.

Looking at your info, we are very similar in age I am 61 (will be 62 on Friday), I am retired, I also walk my dog twice a day. (Great huh, just when you want a quiet life after working for most if it, you get saddled with this lot lol).

Also, don't wait to be offered the X-pert course, look it up on line and book yourself on one, you don't need a referral from your Doctor, but you will need the results of your HBa1c test. The Course is six weeks, 1 day a week, and each session lasts 2.5 hours. I didn't think much of their refreshments (Tea/Coffee & Biscuits!!!) good job I took my own snack (50g mixed nuts).

If you need any further info please let me know, only glad to help.

Take care

So... I had my first appointment with diabetic nurse today. She was very good, kind and re assuring - my results are below in my signature. I have to do another weeks testing before being given Metformin, meanwhile im to follow the suggested diet ( guess which one) yes the Eatwell Plate! but to be fair I was told to keep the carb portions down and try and follow the traffic light system. So i will take what i can from it for this week, and keep my carbs low until i get the tablets and then get testing again. I'm feeling positive i can be on top of things.

Oh and .... I was given a testing kit! shown how to use it and told i can get supplies. I might just have to top them up if they don't give enough.
Im being put down for Xpert course too.We have an excellent GP practice here to be honest and they haven't let me down this time either.

Also been put on BP tablets for the first time as this has been consistently up all week. DN told me they like to keep diabetic blood pressure below 140 (top number) . Cholesterol is a bit high at 6.6 so may be given Statins due to my mums diabetic/stroke history.

Thanks to everyone here i was prepared with all the facts before i went, which made it a lot easier, and i felt in control of the situation :)

Beginning to find vegetarian food to fill up on to thanks for all the suggestions. Just the first step on a long road, glad ive got you guys here

It does make it a lot easier if you know the facts beforehand so you can ask the right questons, glad you feel much more positive about the road ahead, it is also reassuring that we have all the information we need on this site and lots of knowleagable people giving us support and advice when we need it.
