Very painful leg

I have had pains in my right leg now for some time and have put it down to sciatica which I have endured for seemingly a very long time. However I also have swelling in my ankle with considerable pain, my leg in places feels very tender and the back of my knee is so painful when I sit down it makes me cry out as I bend my knee. Is this due to bad circulation do you think, my doctor just keeps telling me to take pain killers which only partially helps. I also use Voltoral which I can now get on prescription but this although very good only lasts for a short time. My left leg seems ok but after being on holiday and walking around a lot with much difficulty is also swollen at the ankle but no pain. I have had to start using a stick to walk which I have never had to do but this does not stop the pain which seems to be getting worse. Can anyone advise please? Thought of low carbohydrate diet (not sure will help) but am really concerned it might be a thrombosis which scares me a bit.

Your doctor can ultrasound for thrombosis. Should have done so to my mind. Nevertheless a low carb diet cannot hurt and is known to help in many conditions

Hi Flo,

You need to go back to your Dr. and ask for a referral to orthopaedics. Your problems could be any number of things and could be the start of diabetic related problems including charcot foot or a musculoskeletal disease. We cannot diagnose here as we are not qualified but I do urge you to press your Dr. for a referral as the sooner you get a diagnosis then the sooner you can get some suitable treatment. Pain killers alone will not get to the root of the problem.
Take care,
