Very worried about vision...!

Hi all,

I'm hoping that someone can help.

My wife has been a diabetic for a round 6 years, and she has always had very good eye sight.

The other day she suddenly noticed that her distance vision had become blurry. It was fine in the morning, but by the afternoon it had gone worse!

We went to an optician yesterday who recommended that she wears glasses as it's an age thing (39), and the diabetes clinic weren't that helpful neither!

The only change she has made recently (same insulin etc), is that she has began exercising more.

So my question is, after six years of injecting insulin, why on earth would her vision suddenly become worse?

Oh, and hello from a newbie!

Regards,

Damian

Hi Damian
welcome to the forum, excuse me if my spelling is off!
Okay i don't know alot about insulin, Has your wife been checked for glucoma?
Your wife is 39. Hi I am 33 nearly 34, I have bad eyesight but not from diabeties, I am going to lose minium 90% of my vision don't know when but i am getting there! Don't panic mine is non diabetic linked!
How is her blood sugar control?
I am a type 2, It could be with the exercise is causing her blood sugar to go high or lower naturally this is turn could be causing the blurred vision!
I am sure that someone will come along shortly who know more than i Know

For a diabetic, a sudden episode of blurred vision normally occurs when blood sugar levels are higher than normal, or where blood sugar levels have dropped to to a point that is lower then the body (and eyes) hhave been accustomed to. So the question is, what changes have there been in your wife's BS levels when the blurred vision occurred.

If there are no changes, or very minimal ones, then the blurred vision will not be diabetes related.

Thanks for your fast responses.

She's going for a another eye test this afternoon, second opinion.

The only change has been the exercise, and it's only her distance vision that's blurry. In the morning she could read a sign from where she works, and in the afternoon she couldn't... very worrying!

Thanks again for your swift replies!

Hi Damian,

A sudden change like that would seem to be more likely diabetes related. Make sure she mentions to the optician that she is diabetic. If the optician doesn't know about the diabetes then they will automatically look for something else as the cause.

When my blood sugar is high my vision from about 3+ metres away goes very blurry and comes on very quickly. very good tell tale sign infact. i went to the opticians with this as it affected my work and i also got terrible headaches she said it was indeed my blood sugar causing this and the reason its worsens towards the end of the day is because my eyes get tired from having to work harder through blurr and high sugar, so i wouldnt worry too much. like previous posts definately say she is diabetic and remember diabetics get eye check ups free :) but any prescription you have to pay for unless your entitled to a NHS voucher for any other reason :) hope its just a minor problem that can be solved in a jiffy :) x
