Hi

Would like some views on my new diet and some guidance if possible. My diet used to look something like this:

Morning: 3 weetabix,1 banana,handful of blueberries-8 units novorapid
lunch 2 wholemeal pittabreads with tuna and small salad,1apple-12-15 units novorapid
evening: omlette with rice and salad, 1 apple-15-20 units novorapid
evening: 30 units lanctus
evening: 3 weetabix if exercised- no insulin

It now looks like this:

Morning: all bran and blueberries, 1 apple-6 units novorapid
lunch: wholewheat pasta, tuna and prawn mixed with quark, peppers and spring onions,1pear-10 units novorapid
4 mile run
evening: 2x pork chops with mixed veg, nil fat yoghurt with strawberries, blueberries and plum-8 units novorapid
evening: 25 units lanctus

Im trying to lose about a stone and feel that my diet was the main problem. Does this diet look better?

Rich

Hi Rich,

It is certainly a great improvement. As your target is to lose weight then your best route is to cut down the starchy carbohydrate content as much as possible. That way you will need even less insulin, and it is the insulin that builds weight.

There are a few more improvements that you could make. The All-Bran at 46g carb per 100g is better than the Weetabix at 68g per 100g, but is still very high in carbs. Instead of cereal for breakfast have you considered having eggs (boiled, fried, poached, scrambled, in a omelette, continental style cold with some brie and ham)? Again the pasta for lunch is high in carbs. I appreciate it is wholewheat pasta, but that means it has the same amount of carbs as other pastas but it converts them into glucose a bit slower. I also like pasta but I sometimes use one of the low-carb varieties (like Dreamfields), cooked in the evening and chilled in the fridge ready to have as a tuna/pasta or chicken/pasta salad for lunch the next day.

You're certainly getting the hang of it.

I agree with Dennis

Ta for the replys. I feel tho I need the carbs to do my running-is this not the case or do I just need less?

While you can eat carbs and burn glucose to fuel your running, you don't have to.
When I run or cycle first thing in the morning, it's always after a zero-carb breakfast.

I tend to exercise late afternoon/early evening so is it ok to eat virtually no carbs all day? And then I try to have a very low carb evening meal. Is it healthy to pretty much have no carbs in your diet?

Hi Rich,

But you're not having no carbs - the fruit and vegetables in your diet will provide all the carbs you need, and in a much more healthy form as they are also rich in vitamins, minerals and fibre.

I see!! Could you please explain the theory how a low carb-high fat diet is good for you (I read a post earlier but cant get my head round it) Could you tell me what kinds of fat I should be eating?
Also how does a low carb-low fat diet = protein (which I guess = carbs??) Sorry for the questions but I seem to get my head round one thing then kinda fall into another problem that I dont understand :?
