Wonder if anyone can give me any feedback . The nurse on my visit today was happy with my foot inspection she mentioned their was a little dry skin and gave me the cracked skin scenario and how important to look after my feet which I am well aware.
My BS averages 5.5 these days and I just wondered if that's sufficient if maintained to protect delayed healing if any problems did occur( all ok at the moment ) ?
I tried to get of the metformin but she wasn't having it .
My BP was a little higher but she wasn't overly concerned .

Hi Rog

I think the general view on here is that provided you keep below 7.8 you will avoid further damage so I would think 5.5 should be Ok. I've been around that for a while and I do feel better generally than I used to but I couldn't say whether aiming for an even lower level would speed up any healing, I simply don't know what the relationship is.

What was your HbA1c?

I'm sure you know this but you can fool yourself into thinking your levels are lower than they are by testing at the wrong times. That 7.8 is a figure you want to keep below even after a spike, and your highest levels would normally be first thing in the morning and around 2 hours after eating.

Hi Tim
Hba1c was 42 ( August) down from 109 in May so hopefully into normal range on next one , rightly or wrongly had a break from metformin for a couple of weeks and although higher I was generally around the mid 5s, even after a week or so back on metformin my fasting is down to 4.4 again .

That sounds to me like you are doing well then and I think you are about where I was 12 months ago.

I was diagnosed after I developed neuropathy in my hands and feet, no idea at the time what that even was and by the time i realised something needed looking at I think I had done some damage.

My GP told me there was little that could be done to help with neuropathy but if I controlled my blood sugars I could avoid further damage., and If I was lucky, I might see some gradual improvement in my condition.

The DNs idea of good control was "anything in single figures is fine for type 2s" (I was about 14.6 at the time....) but reading through the advice on here, particularly in a thread called "help in dealing with neuropathy", I decided anything below 6 before a meal is acceptable, and I should avoid eating anything that causes a spike of more than 2.0 , two hours later.

15 months on I am normally around 5 to 5.5, I have regained feeling in my fingers and my feet have returning sensation, which was extremely painful for quite a while but is improving now, so I think its all good.

I am not keen on pills either and am trying to cut down on Metformin too - I was on 4 per day for a year or so, cut it to 3 three weeks ago, and dropped to 2 as of yesterday.

I shall be keeping a close eye on the figures though!

HTH
