Hi, wondered if anyone knew much about Vitamin D?

I asked to be tested at my last appt almost 6 weeks ago. Just phoned my consultant's secretary as I was sent a treatment guidle=line in the post but no further details on my blood result. She said a letter is on the way but in the meantime read out the results to me.

Consultant report has dx me as being Vit D deficient.
25OH Vit D3 - 35
25OH Vit D2 - <5
Vit D2 +D3 - 35

I've been reading ranges and am a bit confused. I know this is not optimal but was surprised it was classed as deficient. The letter said I have been prescribed Calcichew D3.

Can anyone help me interpret these levels and offer any advice?

I had mine tested in December. The test was measured in mmol/l and was a 25-OH Vit D test. My result was 65mmol/l The standard (if I remember correctly) was over 60 but medical authorities keep changing the goal posts on what level it should be, and some are mentioning over 75mmol/l but these are UK units. It is very difficult to find a consensus on this. I was Googling for days and didn't really get anywhere. My GP has accepted mine as of no concern.

Cant help with interpreting the results but one thing I found after I was diagnosed as severely deficiet last year with a 250H D3 level of 18 ( normal now) was that
1) capsules of D3 in oil are absorbed better than tablets
2) Calcium is needed for good absorbtion of vit d from supplements but there is a possibility of problems if calcium levels are too high so the appropriateness or otherwise of calcium supplementation needs to be considered in the context of a persons diet and the amount of calcium that provides
I was put on 2x 20,000 iu capsules of D3 weekly, now take 1x 10,000 iu capsule weekly for "maintenance" dose

"How much vitamin D should I take?
Vitamin D status is determined by measuring the amount of 25D in the blood. The following categories for blood levels of 25D have been proposed:

Optimal

greater than 75 nmol/l

Sufficient

50-75 nmol/l

Insufficient

25-50 nmol/l

Deficient

less than 25 nmol/l

Using these levels, a UK study reported that more than half of the adult population have insufficient levels of vitamin D and that 16% have deficient levels during winter and spring. While there is general agreement that levels below 25 nmol/l qualify as deficient, there is no standard definition of optimal 25D levels."

You're defiitely insufficient, and may be experiencing symptoms you weren't attributing to Vit D insufficiency, such as muscle ache.
I occasionally supplement Vit D3, and when doing so take 5000 i.u. Doctors usually prescribe much lower levels, which means you'll take longer to re-establish normal levels.

@librarising Thanks for those figures. Can you say where you got them from? The figures are similar to ones I found, with a proviso that there are no official standards in the UK.

Thanks for the replies.

Like a few others I was getting a bit befuddled by the ranges I was reading from various sources online. What you have posted Geoff, definitely makes things clearer.

Does anyone have experience taking this Calcichew D3 that I have been prescribed? Don't know what dosage yet, though. However, will have to have a word with then about this as I read the info online and it says it shouldn't be taken if you have kidney issues. I actually have not been dx with kidney problems but I do have a fluctuating ACR and have today just had to repeat a urine test due to a protein increase.

Does anyone know if Vit D supplements affect the kidneys?

Also, what is this I read about Vit K2 needing to be taken in conjunction?

All help much appreciated. Thank you.
