Hello everyone.

I've been a T1 for just over 50 years and am in the UK.

In 2017, I met my soul mate online on an online diabetes group, he's also a T1 but in the USA. He proposed in 2018 but then the pandemic hit.

We have met several times, chat daily and have recently returned from a fantastic trip to Toronto after not seeing each other for some time.

We would like to make plans to end the distance in the future. I know getting into each other's countries is going to to be extremely difficult. We are both currently working.

We have thought about Canada, but have had mixed reviews about the health care. We just need to know of a place where we can get good diabetes care and health care that's not going to be overly expensive.

Does anyone have any ideas as to where?

Please only reply if you are going to be polite and courteous.

Thank you.

UK seems a better bet than the USA.
I can't offhand think of anywhere with cheap healthcare and ease of immigration.
You don't say why your USA friend would find it difficult to move to the UK.
If job and/or income are an issue then this may well be a problem wherever you try to go.

Thank you for your reply.

He's a brittle diabetic, deaf with a cochlear implant and think I'd have to be earning a lot to bring him here. Am only working part-time.

I've got a teen on the cusp of their last year at school, and wouldn't be going until they'd gone to university, so have some time to weigh up the options.

As @LittleGreyCat said I think here in uk has the cheapest healthcare. Years ago I used to sell new homes (hated it lol) and we had a large number of British citizens coming back from USA, Canada and Spain to name a few countries, because the healthcare was becoming too expensive if they continued to live there.

Hi @Atlantic2017 I have a similar story to you minus the diabetes ( I;m a recent type 2) I dated my now husband long distance for seven years before we married six years ago and we spent a lot of time researching USA or UK, In the end, while the States had lots of appeal, we settled on UK based on employment prospects, healthcare availability but mostly that his daughter was already grown up but my two lads were still in secondary school Oh and I've lived within a mile of my parents my entire life and just couldn't do it to them.
You are right, it was scarily expensive. The visa costs are just the start and you need to prove you have money in the bank. Every time you turn round its another 500- 1000 pounds
We thought it would be impossible then realised how much were spending on flights back and forward and for a year waved at each other on skype and banked every penny / cent and here we are !
I'm happy to chat in direct message if you like but there are lots of great online forums (google ex pat advice) which I'm sure you have already explored.
Apologies that my response wasn't diabetes related but I read your post to my husband who is sitting in the chair that has been "his chair" for years and we both remember when it all felt impossible so I wanted to wish you the very best of luck.

It can be done. My Canadian wife (now divorced!) moved to the UK and eventually became a UK citizen. My type 1 was a big black tick against me going to Canada. This was a few years ago but there were still a good few hoops to jump through - mainly getting married, proving a relationship, a property and showing you had a decent job with enough money in the bank.

My friend's Chinese wife has recently moved to the UK but it has been a long and very expensive ongoing ordeal for them.

Best of luck!

Thank you so much! Really appreciate your helpful response.
I am unsure how to send a PM? Have looked on a thread and says to click an envelope, but there isn't one?
Would love to message and ask more questions!

Look at the very top right hand corner of this page - next to your name is the little envelope- click on that to open PMs, once open type members name you want to start a private message with

Or even easier: hover your mouse over the name of the person you want to PM/ tap their name if using a phone and a little pop up screen will appear, saves you from typing the name of the member. :)
