My name is Jessica, I am 18 years old and a qualified hairdresser, I have had diabetes for 16 years now type 1 insulin dependant and I have also had coeliac disease for 14 years.

I am looking to find people who are up for talking about similar things, days that are difficult and when it sucks to have diabetes, ect.

I don't know how it works on here to message back but I'm sure ill find out!!

Thanks for your time

Hi Jessica,
I just had to reply to give you a laugh. I am a 60 year old man and the last time I had a professional haircut was 1968! It cost a pound. You could buy a house for that. I was working as a 15 year old in London with my dad and I got a lot of silver paint in my hair. A local Italian barber washed it all out and then cut it for me. A pound!! I have done it myself ever since. I have a nice big pair of scissors that I use for wallpapering (really) If it's long I cut it then wash it then cut it again. Being a bit of a scruff I don't have to worry about what it looks like. Funny enough it don't look too bad. Am I too old to retrain as a hairdresser? I have my own scissors.
Lee.

That made me chuckle!!

No doubt it you wanted to retrain then you could! Lol!!
The funny thing is my boss is an Italian barber and I could imagine him telling me a story similar!! Haha!!

Have you got diabetes yourself??

Hi Jessica,
I was diagnosed as type2 several years ago, not sure how long exactly. Two years ago I went on a diet and I have now lost 5 1/2 stones, I think that's about 35 kg in new money. With my weight loss went my diabetes. I am fairly sure I am not 'cured' I just don't need medication and I can eat an almost normal diet with no ill effects. I don't eat what I want because if I did the weight and diabetes would return. I am 100% certain about that. I consider myself one of the very lucky ones. There are many threads on this forum where people question whether there is a cure for type2. I don't know the answer.

I keep asking the jobcentre if I can retrain to do something else. I have been a builder since I left school aged 15. But because I still get the odd job now and then I think they may be reluctant to invest too much money on someone my age who might still be able to support himself. I stll look for other things to do but I am sure you can imagine how difficult it is for me to try and come up with a new way of earning a living when all I know is building. Next time I go in I will ask them about retraining as a hairdresser! I do remember sitting in the barbers chair all those years ago looking at my nice clean hair in the mirror. The barber then picked up a cut-throat razor and with one swipe, and I do mean swipe!, down each side of my face he trimmed my sideburns. I think that might be the main reason I have never gone to a barber since. Cowardice.
I am checking the jobcentre website on a different page, better get back to it.
Bye for now, Lee.

Hi Jessica. I think its important to talk to someone who understands, even just to unload a bit. There are loads of ace people going about in here :). It must feel quite restricting suffering from celiac and diabetes! If you ever need someone to talk to, just holla!

Thankyou very much, what is your situation do you have type 1? And yes on an off day it's nice to have a moan about it, but nice to speak to people who understand my situation other than people who try to have but don't understand what I mean 100%

And lee, good luck with that, ican imagine that must be so difficult, especially if you enjoyed your job as a builder!! But I can imagine it doesn't help with your sugar levels, my boyfriends dad have type 2 and did the opposite to you and didn't look after it and gained more weight, he now has type 1.5 and has to inject, so well done for succeeding in getting healthy again!

Thanks for answering guys!! Means a lot
Jessica

Yeah, type 1, I was diagnosed when I was 11, I'm 29 now. Had ups and downs myself and know how difficult it is.
