'We are all different'

‘We are all different’ tends to be invoked rather often in forum threads, but people often use it to mean very different things. I have noticed the following different senses:
1. We have different types of diabetes, or were diagnosed at different times, or are at different stages of the condition’s development.
2. Our individual systems respond in slightly different ways to different foods (i.e. some foods spike our BGs whereas others seem to take them without ill effects)
3. We have different lifestyles/jobs, which means that certain types of diet or medication are more feasible for some of us than for others.
4. We have different combinations of medical conditions which means that certain forms of diet/exercise/medication may not be as appropriate/possible for some of us as they are for others.
5. We reserve the right to make our own individual response to how we balance out the risks of diabetic complications and possible side-effects of medication, with how we like to eat and live, and how far we are prepared to change and disrupt our diet.

It would be useful if people would clarify which of these (or other) meanings they intend when they say ‘we are all different’ in a discussion. I do not personally see why these reservations should nullify general remarks and advice about preferable forms of diet, exercise or medication.

I do not systematically low-carb (reasons 3 and 5), I take sulfonylureas (reasons 3 and 5), I take statins and other heart medication (reason 4). I am most definitely different in my diabetes type (reason 1). I do not see this as any reason to question/argue with/resent people making the case for LCHF, or people making observations about types of food that GENERALLY raise blood sugars, or people commenting that a particular diet is NORMALLY unsustainable for people who want stable blood sugars, or people saying that it is better to control diabetes by diet and exercise alone if possible. These points make perfect sense to me: can’t we just take the ‘we are all different’ points 1-5 as read, rather than implying that they invalidate the other comments? Surely we can reserve the right not to accept advice (for perfectly good reasons) without taking it as a personal affront that it has been offered?

Back in the 1960's one of the lecturers at a London medical school used to tell medical students that his first tenet of medicine was that "people differ". By this he meant that whilst the students would learn all sorts of "rules" and "laws" about anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, surgery etc. which gave a framework on which to build diagnoses and treatments, there would always be exceptions to the "norms", and one could never predict with certainty how a patient would react to any particular treatment.

All 5 seem relevant, wouldn't like to choose one over the other.

Keep it as simple as possible works for me , as in all people are different so are health needs ...etc etc ...
I would not like to really expand to much ...because we are all different ...a big subject ...

If we clarified every time we responded to a post with our "differences" it would be long winded and repetitive.
Let's just say we are all walking the same path by different roads and we respond as individuals to post we think our experiences may be helpful.

I think my point is more about clarifying in what sense and when 'we are all different' is actually relevant to the points being made in a discussion. I know I sound pedantic -- I just think that, used too loosely, 'we are all different' is actually an impediment to clarity and precision of thought and discussion, and sometimes closes down debate in an unhelpful way. Or perhaps that's just me.

Not sure what you mean, you made some good points in your opening post why ''we are all different.''

We all have different attitudes values and beliefs not to mention perceptions and life experiences , all being individual ...
To much information being requested is what I perceive ...
And people as individuals have to feel comfortable sharing what they do .....

In the word of health , patients are people ...all being different ...
This is likened to life and the individuals in it ....no more clarity from me , I will be exhausted

@Kat100, how great is it that we are all different, what a boring world it would be if we all shared the same thoughts and views on life

We are all different seems a ridiculous response to anything in my limited opinion, it's a non statement

It's basically saying, I disagree but have no explanation or don't want to explain why

Unless someone on the forum didn't realise that we are all different?

It's as useful as saying "we all breath air"

I love the phrase 'we are all different'.
Because we are.
And feel it's very appropriate to a lot of discussions we have on this form.
I also like 'your mileage may vary'.
So I use them both regularly.

But realistically, in a circumstance where I use either of those phrases, I tend to make three assumptions:
  1. You will exercise common sense and only apply this suggestion/opinion/idea if appropriate, and adapt it as necessary to your personal circumstances.
  2. I try to phrase my comments in a way that supports (1).
  3. If you lack the common sense to do (1), then God help you, and you are suffering a far greater disability than Diabetes, and it is unlikely that anything I say will get through to you.
Thankfully, (3) comes into play exceedingly rarely.

Which proves that we are all different

Hm... when I use it, I usually mean all five.

And for that reason, I don't believe in 'general advice'. A diet that works great for one person, can be a total disaster for another. That's why the forum is great for exchange of experience - it's quite probable you can find someone with similar condition as yours, who can have some useful tips - but it can't replace advice from an expert who knows details about you and your health.

How about "we are all the same"?

After all if we share 60% of our genetics with fruit flies and something like 98% with chimps, how different can one human be to another?

So I think it should be "we all think different"

Of course we are all different and unique .

How about this for a short but real reference point .
Okay - I wear a shoe size 4.5 (four and a half)

Could you all comfortably wear this size of shoe ?
To walk in daily ?

What I can wear, use and tolerate is what works for me .
My health issue combinations and medication intollerances .
Plus the diabetes is what makes me unique as a person .
Of course we are all different .

My small shoe size could/would possibly cripple another person/member if you see what I mean ?
We all need differing shoe sizes - differing routines/meds/regimes/diet
Being different is not to be seen as a negative thing - just what makes us all unique .
Unique and different - sharing the same 'diabetes' condition .
It has happened to us all - a condition by medical diagnosis .

We can continue to -
Share our experiences and support each other positively it's what we do here best .

We are all doing a great thing here - supporting each other within a Diabetes community .

I think when we say we are all different we mean there is no.. one size fits all.. when it comes to controlling diabetes simply because we are all different

How I see it is,
I am different from another person with diabetes, because I am type 1 , you may be type 2, or the same as me Type 1. I have had type 1 for 25 years, you may of had it for 45 years or 5 years.
I am different because I may be smaller in build than you, shorter in height than you, older or younger than you, work at a more physical job or a less active one. You could eat 3 biscuits and take 3 units for carbs, I could? and my BS would be climbing the walls.
Yes we are all different. We may be on the same long ardious road, but we will take a different path along the way. I personally see no problem in the quote and If it warrants it in a post, then I will use it It's good for me
