It's a cat cheek pheromone analogue, and the scent says to a cat "this belongs to me and I am happy and calm in this place". It's been a miracle worker for me. It keeps the general peace, but the biggest thing was, it stopped the high-strung female cat from doing all her territorial marking indoors. Even neutered Female cat "marking" pee stinks about as badly as tomcat pee!
