Wee infections...going to hospital now

Hi,

I don't think this problem is diabetes related as I am well-controlled and don't eat sugar but wanted to see if anyone else has had similar problems.

I started getting regular wee infections in August last year, some started as cystitis-y symptoms and others started in my kidneys. The cycstitis-y ones always take a while to clear up...i've just had one and it is still hanging around after 3 weeks and 3 lots of antibiotics. I have been referred to a urologist so am going to get sorted but i wondered if anyone else had reoccuring problems like this and what the end result was.

Thanks
Feebs

I used to get a lot of this when I was a student.

Do you drink enough fluid ? At least 2 litres a day if possible to keep the kidneys flushing. You could also try Cranberry juice if it doesn't send your Bg levels too high and if you are not on any medications that forbid cranberry juice, check with your doctor.

Many people make the mistake of not drinking because obviously it hurts when you 'go' but keeping the urine diluted actually helps flush out the 'bugs'.

I go through bouts of wee infections, usually when I haven't been drinking enough. It also takes me ages to get rid of them, and several courses of antibiotics - a 5 day course just isn't enough for me I find. Once my gp told me that sometimes you get wee infections for no apparent reason, but it's a cycle your body goes through. I gues what she was saying is that once you've had one, it's common to have another and another etc. No help to you I'm afraid, but remember you're not alone, even though you feel like at the time.

Hiya!

Yeh, I've had this too - even before I was diabetic. I can get re[peated urinary tract infections for a year or more and then they go away and don't come back for several years - but they always come back eventually :( I find that the antibiotics for cystitis cause thrush - and the thrush causes cystitis and there it goes in a never-ending circle!! Get your doctor to check you haven't got an underlying fungal infection that is causing the urine infection.

Hi Feebs

Used to get UTIs all the time then they went for a while... until a month ago. Had a really nasty one - temperature, sick, shivers, sweats, the works - took 3 weeks and 2 weeks of antibiotics to clear it up and then another week for the thrush :( so my sympathies to you...

I'm sure you've heard (and probably tried!) all the tips before, but just incase...
- Always wipe front to back, wear cotton knickers, avoid tight clothing, wash daily but avoid scented soaps etc
- Drink plenty fluids, generally, but especially when you feel a bout coming on - a spoon of bicarbinate of soda in a pint of water every hour neutrolises your wee and makes it burn less
- always go to the loo before AND after having sex
- you can get cranberry supplements to take instead of juice (only juice i can find locally is full of sugar or artificial sweetners), i got my tablets in a health food shop but imagine pharmacies and big supermarkets would have them too
- keep a diary of attacks, and keep a note of any potential causes - foods / activities / stress etc - so you can see any patterns developing. Note any other symptoms as well - might help your gp/urologist pinpoint any underlying problems sooner.

Hope you get to the bottom of it

Thank you for the replies...i keep wondering what i am doing wrong but apparantly nothing!

Went to see consultant at hospital yesterday and was thorough prodded and poked (feel like i've flashed me bits at everyone lately - the joys of being female!) Had a x-ray (well 2 because didn't get first one properly) and had a right fight with me gown...was sweating by the time i got out of there!

Have to go for camera up me wee bits and a kidney scan. Doc told me to keep doing as i am. He asked me if i find that sex causes my wee things...erm no because i won't let my husband anywhere near me incase i get bad wees! Mind i am laughing but suppose it is a problem but wen you have been together 13 years you dn't do it that much anyway!

So i'll look forward to the rest of the prodding about then...!

I often wonder if men find it as embarrassing as women do when their "delicate" areas are inspected?

YES
Yep always min of two or three nurses poking and prodding, Passing the time of day
as catheter is pushed up the little chap

Then you get the young woman doc that spins you over on your side then rams her arm up your Bum,,,,and says That all seems fine today .

I seem to visit the urology dept on average every 6 weeks now
Over the last year or so i have lost most of my inhibitions :? no choice

I have Cystoscopy next week so more prodding at me Bits & Bobs

Hiya. After reading this thread it reminded me off a old friend of mine who had exactly the same problems with recurring bladder n thrush n cystitis infections. What finally cured her was a minor 'op' to stretch her ureathea tube apparantly some persons both men and ladies can have narrowing of the tube thus giving all these problems.... She has been fine, dandy, n randy ever since! Just thought I would mention it! Any help? Anna.x
