Hello people
As you will guess I'm a newbie .Diagnosed 2 months agoAs a type 2 diabectic .Metformin tore my stomach to
Bits so I was then put on to slow release which made no difference to the diarrhea that was ruining my lift.My BS are very high 27.5 and 18 is my lowest Consultant now says insulin (Novomix 30) twice a day .in the past two years I have lost five stones in weight through using the
Points System at weight watchers which was hard to do
But I persevered only to be told then that I'm Now diabectic .My research into insulin has shown weight gain and my heart is broke at the thought of gaining any weight .Please forgive me if I sound selfish I know the insulin will keep me a live but I can't help this panic inside me .I have researched low carb and low fat but people don't seem to stop the weight creeping on.
Has any one any tips to help me stop this worry

Hi Rosebud,
It's not selfish, you've worked hard to get your weight down, as a serial dieter 25 years plus I know how hard it is to lose weight and keep it off. the nightmare that we might put it back on only to real.

I'm type 2 and control it just with diet. my diet is low carb and low fat. I have lost 25lbs in 7 weeks.
I don't know about insulin at all, but I'm sure someone will be along very soon to give you advice. I just wanted to tell you that low carb and low fat does work.

I hope this helps in some small way
good luck
vonbon

Thank you Vonbon for your reply .I think it's the insulin
That puts the weight on but I am going to try very hard
To watch what I eat.
I know there are worst things in life than being Diabectic
But putting on the weight again is deff a No No for me.
My big day for insulin is Tues 26th March I have to have training on how to administer the dose so at the moment
I'm trying very hard to cut down on my food all I can do is try

I was diagnosed type 1 2.5 years ago. I put on 3stone in that time. In the past 2months however I decided to try and get control over my diabetes. Previously I had been eating what i liked and injecting copious amounts of insulin to cover me. I now eat a moderately low carb diet of between 80-120g daily. My insulin has therefore reduced and iv lost 9lb which I'm overjoyed with. I know everyone is different but I wish u best of luck and positive energy xx

Wow well done Samantha13 thank you for replying
You and Vonbon1 has helped me realize this is not going to be easy and I'm just going to have to watch what I eat
So in return for that I will hopefully need less insulin .Keep up the good work

This is what I'm worried about too! I've been on Novorapid and levemir for almost 4 weeks now and I've already put on 4lbs :S

I'm 5ft 3" and weigh about 8st 9lbs, so I'm on a slim side and have a little room to gain weight if it happens. But I certainly want to keep that to a minimum.

Low carbing just isn't an option for me. I eat a HIGH carb diet. Pasta, porridge and baked potatoes in a variety are my diet! If I cut them out I'm very very VERY hungry and extremely irritable. But I'm not sure what else I can do to stop the inevitable

I know it is so worrying.
My DN seems to think putting on weight isn't a problem.
Your weight sounds Gr8 .
I'm 5.2 and 12.7libs but had lost 5 stone so I do not need any weight gain.
I'm grumpy all the time anyway so low carbs won't make any difference to me
Good luck and thanks for your reply

It's great now because I lost a stone and a half before I was diagnosed so keeping that off would be ideal haha I'm from a larger family despite us all eating a healthy diet and regular exercise. We blame the wine for it I don't want to follow the route of my parents and siblings so fingers crossed!

Your weight loss is mega impressive. I don't think I have the will power for that so I'm thinking mitigation is key!

It's coming off slowly tho I havnt been doin any exercise lately. Am hoping with some walking I can boost it up. Wuld love to get back to my pre diagnosis weight xx

Hi rosebud,

I don't know much about insulin as I am not on it, but my dad is T2 and has been on insulin for a few years and I know he hasn't put any weight on apart fron a couple of kilos when he first started on insulin that he soon lost. Don't quote me as I may be wrong but I think it's all about matching your insulin to your food and not the other way round, someone with more knowledge than me will hopefully have some answers for you

Hi Rosebud and welcome to the forum.

Going on to insulin does not have to mean putting on weight.

I was put on insulin at diagnosis and over the next 12 months lost 4 stone so it is possible to maintain weight loss or even to lose more weight if thats what you want to do.

Try to match your insulin to your diet rather than eating more carbs to match your insulin.

If you eat more food than you need you will put on weight.

Yes walking is Gr8 I have done that wore the Tshirt but I'm so lazy .I feel sorry for myself because I work full time and am
Exhausted when I get home so eating and TV and bed for 10pm was great and wow no weight gain boy was I happy untill I had bloods done for pending surgery only to be hit with ( you are Diabectic) so no weight gain was down to high BS .So now I have to deal with flipping insulin which will help to put on the pounds again.Well it could be worst at least there is help for me some people have no outlook in life

Rosebud,
Your weight loss is impressive! Don't be too concerned about the weight gain, just try to eat healthily and exercise as you must have done to lose all that weight. The one thing that I would mention is to be careful of hypos (when your blood sugar is less than 4.0 mmols) because you will have to eat sugar or glucose to increase your blood sugar and that can be calories you really don't need.

As everyone else here has said, take enough insulin to cover your food, not eat enough food to cover yor insulin and you should be fine.

Losing weight as a diabetic is harder, and you've done a fantastic job! Keep it up.

Thank you Sid and lovinglife for your replays .
I am delighted to hear that not everyone puts on weight with insulin.
The old sayings ring true here (you are what you eat).
Thanks Dougal it's time to eat well and get of my backside as I did in the past.
All your replays have helped me and encouraged me to shut up and do something about it

Hi guys, losing weight is always difficult keeping it off more so. I have been a serial dieter for 25 years plus, am still obese, lost 26lbs in 8 weeks, a great start and I hope it keeps coming off. still 105lbs to go. YIKES sounds a lot when it's put into lbs.

Being diabetic has done me a power of good, as far as losing weight and eating healthier goes anyway.
I have lost and gained weight many stones over the years and I had become very complacent. I just couldn't be bothered anymore. so when I was diagnosed T2 it gave me a kick in butt I really needed.

I find it hard to make different meals as I'm so fussy, I'm off meat altogether just now after having been ill I had some minced steak the night I became sick put me right off meat for a long time. YUK

I'm not a big veggie eater either, love salad if it's got dressing on it, trying to find a low carb one not easy.

Dougal an amazing loss for you well done.
Lovinglife wow. amazing loss.

Rosebud keep at it huni. you'll get there.
vonbon x

Thanks Vonbon1
Today it's snowing here in Ireland and I have a day off work .
It's so cold and all I want to do is eat .
I made myself a pot of veg soup and when I checked my BS they were ok so maybe the soup is fine.

Try to remember as a diabetic injecting insulin, you are only mimicking what the body produces naturally, so don't be down about it, you're at no chemical disadvantage..in fact you can view it positively, the requirement to more closely analyse what you eat and how it effects you means you're one step ahead of the average dieter
