Yvonne, did you lose a lot of weight in the period up to diagnosis as TYpe 1? If this took some time to develop, then as well as fat loss it is likely you were chronically dehydrated as well - insulin can initially cause water retention as well as fat gain which can increase both weight and inches. This can take some time to settle down. Getting insulin requirements as low as possible while maintaining good BG control seems to be the key to weight control for Type 1. How low carb do you go? Exercise can help - not so much through burning calories but by improving insulin sensitivity. Also Yvonne the reason you were a size 8 before diagnosis may be due to unhealthy weight loss caused by undiagnosed diabetes. So size 8 may not be a healthy weight for you. What's common is for newly diagnosed Type 1s to be underweight, not healthy. Once they go on insulin they quickly return to a healthy weight. But if the insulin dose isn't reduced at the point of getting back to a healthy weight, they overshoot and get overweight. The solution is to lower the insulin, but you need to do this with your health care team.
