weight loss for type 1

Messages

i have been diabetic for 28 years and have always had pretty good control, (with the odd moment of relapse) but anyhow i have always had to keep my weight under control as well, im only 5ft 1", a couple of years ago i joined weight watchers and lost 19lb and my weight was down to 9st 7lb i was exstatic and felt great and my insulin was also reduced. anyhow the weight piled back on and the insulin increased, im now 11st 6lb which isnt good for my diabetes or myself esteem. i cant seem to get motivated and at the age of 44 its harder to loose weight. i have porride for breakfast, salad for lunch with a low fat dressing and usually for evening meal its meat and veg, obviously in between i do have digestives (my treat) i also go on the treadmill everyday for 30 minutes and after 3 months not an inch or a lb has been lost. im so fed up im feeling whats the point. so has anyone got any tips or advice i really want to get the weight down for xmas and my hols next year, i just want to go out and feel good about myself again. losing weight is hard enough as it is without the added complication of insulin and diabetes. I'm T2, but my husband is T1 and has recently lost 2 stone in a few weeks. Essentially it was because he was ill, but the direct reason was that he simply wasn't eating. That shows that eating less works. You still have to take your insulin, but less food requires less insulin. Specifically, Less Carbohydrate requires less insulin. Insulin is the fat building hormone.
I don't like the WW diet for diabetes, it's too high in carbs and as you've found out, most people put the lost weight back on.
Look at your eating plan and at low carb plans and see where you might find a solution

Try reducing your calories Tracy and get more active. It might be a good idea to try Weight Watchers again so that you have the support and encouragement to lose the pounds, my wife did the Slimming World diet and lost a fair bit of weight being on the plan, she said the motivation was going back every week and getting weighed.

My weight loss (3 stone) is due to switching to a lower carb diet (roughly 120g per day) and thus being able to reduce my insulin. I don't tend to have to have to worry about fat content too much now.
I also used to have one or two glasses of wine at the weekends (well from thursday nights really) - I limit alcohol to dinners out now and I only drink fizz (champagne preferably!! ).
I don't got to the gym but I do try and walk over 8000 steps a day in the week and over 10,000 at the weekend.

Good luck with your weight loss as it's never easy and we all find our own way of managing it
