Weight loss...slightly scared

Good evening everyone.

I attended a routine foot inspection yesterday with a nurse and told her that I've lost around 9kg in weight since January.

I started my first active job in my whole life in January (I was previously office based) and I'm walking between 2 and 4 miles a day, as well as lumping large office equiptment up and down stairs. Its fair to say this is the most excercise I have had in the past decade and was enjoying the feeling of been tired at night. Due to the newjob, I found my sugars have been really low, and I was having around two hypos a day, making the blood glucose levels fluctuate between high and low due to my dextrose tablets. I had to reduce my insuln from 18 units twice a day, to 12 units twice a day and the sugars levelled out. I put the weight loss down to the active job, but the nurse sent me for some routine blood tests anyway to be on the safe side.

I give the blood samples this morning, and received a call (which I missed) from the doctors at 6.10pm this evening. They left a voicemail asking me to call them back regarding my blood results, but when I returned the call at 6.30pm, the office had closed. My mind is now racing thinking the worst case scenarios as there was a full blood count request, lipids, kidney and liver functions. I'm just wondering what kind of results would make the surgery call me so quickly. Could this be down to ups and down in my glucose levels and have effected my hb1ac? Or would they inform me of that in a less urgent manner? Basically, I want to know if anyone has had such a quick call from the doctor, and what the reason was for?

Thanks for taking the time to read

Take a big deep breath and try to stop worrying. Getting stressed is not going to help you (easier said than done). Make the phone call in the morning and you'll probably find there is nothing to worry about.

Thanks for the quick reply June.

I'm trying to stay calm but cannot stop thinking about it. Strange, as Im normally a 'Glass is half full' type of guy. This is going to be a long night!

The more uou worry the longer it with be. Have a nice spirit b4 bed & get a good night sleep, you could be worrying over nothing, if it was so urgent they would make sure they got in contact the same day, so it can't be that bad or they would have kept on calling till you answered.
Sleep well.

Thanks Paul. Early night for me. I'll send an update tomorrow

Hi. I hope the call is not for anything serious. Can I say that as you are having great highs and lows and a T1 I would expect you to be on the Basal/Bolus regime and carb-counting. An insulin mix is a good compromise between number of injections and blood sugar control, but if you have very low natural insulin and are having hypos etc then I would discuss moving to Basal/Bolus i.e. a 24 hour and a meal-time rapid insulin.

Hi Daibell,

Thanks for all of that information. To be honest, I had one meeting with a dietician when diagnosed and haven't really seen anyone since. I went through my daily diet and excercise and she pretty much just told me to keep doing what I was doing. No regimes were discussed, other than Novomix 30 twice aday.

I will bring this up with my GP tomorrow and ensure I get a little guidance. I havent been really reading up on care as I had a family greivance just before my diagnosis and wasnt really in the right place. Although this call has severly kicked me into the right place as far as diabetic care and knowledge searching go!
