WHAT ALL CAN I EAT!?

Hi, im travis..
i've had diabetes for about 2 years now....
i have a little idea about what i shouldn't eat, atleast i think i do, im know candy is definitly out of the question.... but if you got any advice on what to stay away from i'd greatly appreciate that advice too!!....
and i've done some research on fruits and stuff and found that i still needto eat them, but eat them with other foods so it wont hit my body as hard...
but other than that i really don't know what i should eat or can eat really...
and about deiting...i don't have one!!..
my doctor has never brought that up, and i only see him once every 3 months....
could that be the reason for not having my BS under control yet!?

It's better to focus on what you can eat, rather than what you can't.
You have choices: you can get advice from diabetesUK or ADA and follow their plan, and see how you get on with it, you could ask your doctor to refer you to a dietician who specialises in diabetes.
then you could do what so many of us on this forum do, which is to eat low carb. A good book to guide you would be "Dr. Bernstein's complete diabetes solution", however the Atkins diet works too or the South Beach Diet. Are you overweight? that needs to be considered too and what medicine you are using, if any. Whatever your choice, you need to learn a bit about it. This forum is a starting point.
You are right that filling up on candy is not a good idea, but 1 square of high cocoa solid chocolate will not hurt you. It depends on which path you choose and how your blood sugar control responds to it. Most fruits are Ok, but they are not essential. You can get all the vitamins and minerals you need from green vegetables.
If your doctor hasn't helped you to get control in 2 years, i would doubt that he knows what he's doing and ask for referal to a specialist or change doctors. My doctor helped me get under control in about 6 weeks.

Hi Travis,

I think that the biggest single influence on your blood sugar levels is the food you eat. This is why I'm so surprised when health professionals like yours will prescribe medications without at least discussing your diet first.
As for dietary do's and don'ts, I'll have my knuckles rapped if I give you my outlook on things. What I would suggest is that you take a look at the various 'Carbs' threads on the forum and see what makes sense to you.

All the best,

fergus

WOW
THANKS FOR THE HELP!!!!...
but when i went to my doctor for the first time i was 16 at the time, and now im 17...
would my age have a reason for him to not want to put me on a diet!?
or would my age affect my diabetes at all??

oh...wow!
well, oerweight is definitly not the issue, i'd be suprised if i weighd more than 125!!..
i'm actually wanting to gain weight really...that's the problem i had from the start when i droped to 96 pounds, it doesn't seem as if it will go up and stay up, and i know an unstabl BS can easily be the cause of that!
but thanks on the info dearly!!
i haven't really limited my self on the carbs yet during any meal!!
but i have been doing that ratio thing i think for a while!..
and i have been doing 1 unit per 7 carbs...but it's really hard to tell eactly how many carbs im eating when i go to a fast food place or a restaraunt, the restaraunt is the hardest, cuz i do have a book about fast foods and the carbs everything has...but the restaraunts still get me!
i might need to change the carb part of the ratio indeed, i just always thought that i couldn't do that without my doctor agreeing to it first!!
but again,
THANKS FOR EVERYTHING!!! =]

lol
that is a ery good point!!
ah!!
really!?
hmm, wow that really does help!!
im definitly going to have to take some serious thought on this!!
thanks a lot for your help!!
it really mean a lot to me!!
and i'll surely take a look at those books as soon as i can!!
