Type of diabetes
Type 2
I was diagnosed last week and have tried to watch what I eat and have bought a meter to help.
What I do not understand is that even though I had a Cheddar cheese salad with new potatoes like my practice nurse told me to eat my readings went up from 12.6 to 17.5 in 1 meal. That seems a lot to me but what do I know after 1 week?

The other thing is..when my wife and I go shopping to Tesco tommoz, when looking at food labels, what is classed as a high sugar/carb content per 100g or per item or percent or is it live and die by the meter to see what's good and what's bad as I go.

Any help would be appreciated

Hi and welcome. Your nurse is wrong. Potatoes will increase your blood sugar, as you have found out. Cheese is good but a salad can hide bad things if it's a bought one. You can get your readings down by eating low carb stuff. I'll tag @daisy1 to give you her info about managing your diabetes.
On food labels, look for around 5g carbs per 100. Ignore the "of which sugar" bit since all carbs are sugar to us.
Lots to learn but all possible, as we've found! Have fun in Tesco and tell us how you get on.

The wife tends to look at carb content on line ... then she can make notes !
I have around 20 to 30g of carbs a day .. So you need to see what is the carb content per portion or per 100g and then work out if you are going to get a reasonable amount for the carb content. The wife says no foods are off limits .. but when I wanted a veggie pastie I only got a slice of it less than half inch thick !!!
The wife is often cooking now with weighting sales in one hand and a calculator in the other !
