What are good BG readings?

I've seen a lot of people saying what are good and what are bad results. Mine seem to be higher... I'm around 7 and change each morning, 5-6 before meals (but can be up to 8) and usually between 9 and 11 before bed. Now, that seemed high to me but my BA1c is 6.1 which is good right? I guess I'm just a little confused, any help would be appreciated.

Cheers.

An HbA1c of 6.1% means that your average blood glucose is around 8 mmol/l. The NICE guidance here is 4 - 7 mmol/l fasting and under 9 mmol/l 2 hours post meal.. and an HbA1c of under 7.5%.. Your HbA1c of 6.1% certainly isn't bad, a lot of people would be happy with it!

What often does not get said by HCP's is that the risk of developing diabetic complications increases un-proportionally for ever 1% increase in HbA1c over 5%... so at 7% you have around twice the chance of getting complications, at 8% 4 times the chance, at 9% 8 times the chance etc...

Hi Maple! Yeah, figures I gave you are post Prandials for a type 2 - as pneu said, they're a fraction higher for a type 1
Table below shows this

IDF recommended target blood glucose level ranges
Target Levels
by Type Before meals
(pre prandial) 2 hours after
(post prandial)
Non-diabetic 4.0 to 5.9 mmol/L under 7.8 mmol/L*
Type 2 diabetes 4 to 7 mmol/L under 8.5 mmol/L
Type 1 diabetes 4 to 7 mmol/L under 9 mmol/L
Children w/ diabetes 4 to 8 mmol/L under 10 mmol/L
